My brother is looking at one of the new Winchesters and it's marketed as a CRPF action. I'm not familiar with this nomenclature. Is this the same Controled round feeding action as the Model 70 Classic or is it something different that they did to their push feed actions to make them more marketable?

Regards,
Brian

This is not a new design Brian, Savage has had it for years with their Safari model. Basically they cut away the bottom half of the rim and utilize an ejector suitable for controlled feed. It does work as advertised and is a very good action. I wouldn't hesitate to get that action.

IMO the crpf does not offer the best of both.....conversely it offers the worst of both.

If one wants a CRF then he should get one.....if he wants a PF then he should get one.

Personally I'm not a fan of the Savage Idea.....

My M70 CRPF in 270 WSM works like a champ. I think it's very well designed and functions very well...a clever combination of the classic Winchester M70 and the push feed M70.

I don't think it's a bad design. I had a wally world special CRPF, pretty as a length of PVC pipe, but it worked very slickly with WSM cases. Sako's new M85 if essentially the same idea with 3 lugs on the bolt and a much nicer finish.

I would concur, one shouldn't feel horribly bad if he owns a CRF or a PF, but the bastard child of the two doesn't really cut it. I like the model 75 Sako, I don't feel as though I should worry because I don't have CRF, I found it more important to spend my time practicing so I don't short stroke the bolt. For a DG rifle, I invested into a model 70 Win, and never felt as though I gave up much in strength or accuracy.
