I don't shoot any bullet weights other than the 130 grain in my 270s. I use H4831 and my fastest barrel getrs 3130 fps though its 22" barrel.

jjmp,
You sure for the 270Win you haven't confused cup for psi?? A quick search found me this:
270win = 52000cup or 65000psi. The cup to psi is an approximation as no direct comparison exitsts.
Cheers...

No worries mate. I think many will find that whilst for the RUMs/WSMs/RSAUMs/RCMs etc... 64,000 psi sounds horrendously high, many modern cartridges have been pretty close to that for at least a few decades.

A max charge of RL22 under a 130gr TSX gets me just under 3,200fps in a 24" barrel. RL22 has increased the speeds in my 270win.

I use 2 bullets in my 270, the 130 gr Partition and the 145 (yes, 145)gr A Frame, both loaded to about 2900 fps out of my 700 BDL. I realize I could push a little harder, but have never been disappointed with either of these loads. They have done the job on whitetails, muleys, elk, and moose.
They shoot to the same point.
So far, I have never screwed up & taken the wrong box of ammo, but believe I could still hunt if I did as I have a lot of confidence in both bullets.

It has been years since I've shot a 270win. My Best loads were 140 hornady's @ 3100 ish over the chrony. I was a speed freak back then and wore out my brass pretty fast. With the powder we have now though this would be a lot easier to do and the barrel would last forever. I had a short run in with a wsm and it was something I don't need to remember. Nice accurate cartridge but the gun was junk!

bwest, I hear you about helping out at the range. It seems half the people with the new wizbang mags don't even know how to adjust the scope, let alone utilize all that extra velocity.

Never checked the velocities I was getting from my 270 (Interarms Mark X), but it is a cartridge that seems to get more accurate as pressures increase. Mine shot better as powder charges were increased, to the point where pressure signs appeared.

I have an interesting 270, oringally a plain old 270 Winchester but a few years back re-barreld with a 24" Rich Carnes 1:9 twist cut rifled barrel with a bore diameter of .278", just .001" over bore size.

The idea behind the concept (one of the instigators I believe being the late Jack O'Connor) was to permit heavy for calibre bullet to move out at higher than usual velocities but without attendant pressure (why not just use a magnum calibre??) well the barrel was available so I had my friend fit it, here in the U.K we have a hassle each time we want to change a rifle or calibre and must re-apply each time to the police for a variation to our licence, this can take anywhere from 1 to 12 or more weeks, but simply changing a barrel for one of the same calibre avoids the need to vary the licence.

It is a little difficult with some bullets to wring out good accuracy as the bullets must set up and fill the bore to begin with and homogenous bullets like Barnes do not set up too easily!

That said with 60.5 grain of Rel 19 the 130 TSX launches at just over 3300 fps

The 140 Accubond at 3230 fps with 61 grains of Rel 22 and even the 169.5 grain Wildcat ULD RBBT's ahead of 58-59 grains of 7828 will get to 2900 fps and give a 3 shot group at 100 yards of .5 - .8".

These loads would likely kill a regular .277" diameter barreled rifle so I do not advocate their use in such, I am just providing the info for interest.

The downside is that regular .270 factory loads tend not to perfoorm too well in this barrel, but the open based Partitions that obdurate well on firing do respond well to both the faster than normal twist and to the high velocity, best 3 shot group with these in 150 grains is under .5"

I get 3200 fps with reloader 19 and a 26 inch barrel with the 139 tsx. I used some factory loaded 150 grainers to break in the new barrel, and they were going 2950.

I agree with Rick. I am currently using 57 grs IMR 7828SCC, Fed GM210M primer, behind a 150 gr Speer Hot Cor and getting 2850+/- fps. It is not back recoiling out of my Sauer 202 and is one of my most accurate loads out to 200 yards (which is as far as I have tried it). My second best load is 55 grs IMR 7828SCC, a CCI 200 primer, behind a 150 gr Hornady SST. It prints nearly identical to the Hot Cor load.

What's great about this thread, is all the folks who are shooting the great 270 winchester. I have a "bunch" of hunting rifles, but my 270's are my favorite. Here's what I get both loads are with 130 Grain Ballistic Tips. 24" Model 70/ 3100 fps, 26" Model 700 3300fps, sometimes 3400, during the hot weather here in Arizona. Regards to all you "Riflemen".

A few points here:

"Fast" Barrels don't exist. If you are getting higher velocities out of a given length barrel with a specific bullet and powder you are doing so at higher than normal pressures.

I've loaded for a half dozen or so 270 WSM's and a bunch of 270 Winchesters. Loading for both in barrels of the same length and using the same powder and the same bullets (140 Accubonds and RL-22) and not exceeding recommended charge weights of powder the 270 WSM is about 150 to 200fps faster. In the data a checked back on the 270 Win shot them at about 3050fps with 60grs of RL-22 and the WSM's shot them at 3225fps with 66grs.

Kimber, Winchester, and HS-Precision WSM's hold 3 in the magazine +1 in the Chamber, Sako 75 and 85 WSM's hold 4 in the Magazine +1 in the chamber. I'm not sure which only hold 2 but most hold 3 or more. It doesn't really matter that much to me because the stuff I hunt won't wait around for more than 3 shots if I don't hit it with the first!

The the 270 Winchester and 270 WSM are great rounds, the WSM is just newer and 150-200fps faster which means probably not too much. Pick either in a rifle you like and go hunting................DJ

....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

My Browning BAR shoots a handloaded Sierra 140-grain Game King at 2900 fps and it kills deer DRT. :-)

Good shooting,
