Does anyone here still use a 284 win? I am getting some interest in this round as I have a model 70 win in 243 that doesn't shoot that good and I could use a mid sized game rifle. I was considering this round due its being a short action that will fit my current win M70. And that I found a set of 284 reloading dies in my dads reloading bench. Will I be able to properly seat bullets out and still fit them into the magazine?
It looks like a good round and is somewhat on the same idea as the WSM's but maybe it came before its time.

Hi Markus. As I've previously mentioned, I have and use a 284 Win built on a Rem 660 action. It has a Shilen barrel, and I lengthened the mag box and opened up the action a little, so I can seat bullets out to 3.00" to 3.10" (depends on the bullet). Is your model 70 an actual short action or one of the standard length actions with a spacer? The actual Winchester short actions should allow a COL of 3.10". With this COL, the 284 easily equals and can exceed 280 Rem ballistics. I get 3000 fps with 150 gr Nosler partitions in front of 58.5 gr of H4831. I also get (chronographed) 3000 fps with factory 150 gr PowerPoint ammo. You can buld yourself a comfortable, lightwieght, useful quite easily with your model 70 and the 284. I've used this on every type of game we have in Alberta except goat and grizzlie. I play with a lot of differant calibers because it's fun, but I could hunt the rest of my life in NA with the 284, and not feel very handicapped. FWIW - Dan

Markus, I've got a 284 built on a M70 classic stainless short action, with the mag opened to allow the 3.1" COL. It did take some work on the part of the gunsmith to make it feed reliably, but I think it's the perfect action for this cartridge. I haven't used it a lot yet, but 3050 is easy with 140's in the 23" barrel. As long as the gunsmith you choose is comfortable with the action mods, and not just threading on the new barrel, I'd go for it. Actually, if yours is a push feed, it should be easier to make feed than an action like mine with the external claw. Hope this helps.

Thanks alot to all of you. Yes my M70 is a push feed from a Coyote model. So I think it is an actual short action but I could be wrong I don't see a spacer but I don't know for sure what I am looking for. Thats pretty impressive speeds for a short action. I am certainly interested. I was thinking for a gun smith possibly sending the barreled action to E.R shaw to let them do the whole prosses and that I don't really know anyone who is a gunsmith. But I need to wait until I am done with school since its hard to get out hunting while at university.

Markus, I'm sure some of our BC posters could help you with the name of a couple of good BC 'smiths for this kind of work. Martini and Hagn come to mind, I'm sure there are others. - Dan

I have owned a lot of them in Savage M-99M and one 99F, shot a lot of deer with them and a elk or maybe two....It is about like a 270, 280 or 7mm/06. I really like the 130 gr. Speer bullet for deer, all pass throughs and big exit hole about 50 cent size...It is a wonderfull caliber....

I have one built on a Weatherby Ultra Light action. It shoots well with the 150 grain Sierras. Some rifles have been known to have feeding problems and you'll lose one round of capacity due to the fatter case. A great round all in all.

I owned a Browning Safari grade (Belgium-made on a Sako action), as well as a Browning A-Bolt in .284 Winchester. Both were shooters, and I found the cartridge easy to get along with, especially with IMR4350 powder.
It's funny to me that the .284 Win. with its rebated rim was always sort of shunned by most manufacturers as sort of a problematic cartridge, yet everybody's tripping all over themselves producing the WSMs, etc. Go figure.......
The reason the 284 died was because the gun writers missed the whole point of the cartridge and scalded it verbally and in writings. They showed their a$$ on this one...
It is THE round for the short actions and most of all the Lever actions, it gave them .270/280 status...A Sav. 99 or Browning Lever gun in .284 was and is the berries, even today...Outperforms the weak kneed 7-08 by far....
It had a rebatted rim and wouldn't feed according to the Gurus, well thats horse hockey, they all fed well, at least the ones that I owned and a few that I built on Mauser actions.....
I still have a couple of big coffee cans of once fired brass and a couple of hundred new ones just in case I run across a deal on a rifle in a Sav. 99 or Browning...

I understand the Winchester Model 88 was also made in .284, and that those command a premium price now. I've never seen one, but it seems like a good idea. Anyone here have experience with one of these?

One of the gals at work has one in .284.... has had it since the mid 60's. She says it's not for sale. I know she has killed mannny deer and elk with it.
Case capacity is much like 30-06, just short and fat. I have a 6mm-284 that was a heavy barrel 243. I wouldn't mind having a bolt-action Browning 284 I saw in a gun shop awhile back, very nice gun, light and fit.
