I saw a new in the box stainless 300 Weatherby Vanguard with a black synthetic stock at the local gunshop for $449 today. If it's still there I may go back for it tomorrow. What do you guys think of the Vanguard? I'm thinking of using it as an elk/deer rifle and maybe for African plains game as well. I bought one a few years back in a 22-250 for coyotes. It shoots great, but the trigger sucks. After taking it to a gunsmith, and sending it back to Weatherby to adjust the trigger, I had a timmey trigger put on it and am happy with it now.

I have a 270Win in a Vanguard sporter. Love it. I have found a few loads that will put 5 shots touching at 100yds. Let me put it this way... if you don't want it, pick it up anyway and I'll send you the check! Mike

That's a helluva good deal! I have seen the plain blued vanguards in weatherby calibers going for 4-450$ used, let alone new, and even more so in stainless. One of my hunting partners has that same rifle, he is very happy with it. Snag it! If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

You will like the vanguard, but after you replace the trigger with a Timney like Hatchet Jack said. The feed rails allow buttery smooth feeding and loading. The accuracy is top notch. The Timney isn't a difficult install, it will require a little grinding at the rear of the action to make clearance for the safety. John

I won the identical rifle at an SCI function a few years ago. Used it for several years as my "loaner" for clients. Traded it this year and went back to a 308 for my clients as it was too much rifle for some clients. But - I liked it and it shot just fine.
