I am considering a NO.1 Ruger in 9.3x74R. What kind of recoil can I expect. Thanks Elmer.

Elmer; I don't find the recoil of the 9.3 x 74 to be objectionable, but I do shoot several bigger bore rifles. With factory 286 grain my Chapuis, at about eight pounds, has more than a light 30-06, but not as much as my 375 H&H. I've not shot a #1 in 9.3, but it wouldn't be much of a problem to load up some of the lighter Speer bullets to a reduced velocity to start off with and get a feel for your rifle. I predict you're going to love your new #1.

I shoot a Merkel drilling in 9.3x74R and a Brno ZG-47, Oberndorf Mauser Type B, custom FN sporter and had an original Wm. Oschatz custom rifle plus a very light P-64 Mod. 70 re-bored to 9.3x62, the rimless version. The "kick" of all of these is not bad, certainly more than any of my .30-06 rifles, less than any of my several .338WM rifles or my .375H&Hs. I consider it about the same as my P-64-.300H&H original with 200 gr. warmish loads and I think that "most" can handle it while a hot, light .338WM or .375H&H is getting a mite "rambunctious" for many shooters.

My 9.3X62, similar ballistics to the 74, kicks about like a .300 Win.

I shot a few rounds with a Beretta o/u rifled cal. 9.3x74; the recoil was a little stiff, slightly more than my Tikka cal. 300 WM

I have a Ruger #1-V in .300 Win Mag, and a Valmet in 9.3x74R. Neither kicks severely, and though I never tried shooting them alternatively for a half dozen consecutive shots, I'd say they are probably the two most similar rifles I have for recoil from the bench. Never noticed the recoil of either in the field. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Elmer, Like elk hunter.....
Individual recoil tolerences vary considerably but in my experiences both the 9.3x74R & 9.3x62 feel to me like a .30/06 Sprg w/220 gr. RN's on steroids. Others I know cringe at the thought of even getting close to the rifles. Ruger #1's; especially in the IB configuration are pretty hefty and IMO would be a solid choice for this cartridge. I've shot many 9.3x74R double rifles (sadly, I don't own one.....) and their normal good balance, solid handling characteristics and apparent light weight seem to defy the Laws of Physics - VERY comfortable shooting IMO. Also with both the 9.3x74R & 9.3x62 I can easily perceive a (JND=just noticable difference) in milder (read="standard") loads and those approaching the upper scale of the "Pushing-the-Edge-of-the-Envelope" level loaded cartridges - Dunno.....why?. Both of these cartridges do their best work at the 2300 fps w/286 gr.- bulleted loads anyway (opinions WILL vary). When hunting (as most) I hardly notice anything; the rifle simply goes BANG! Having said that from a bench; the 9.3's are where I start to use my "larger cartridge" bench techniques when doing the load works-ups & sighting-in. I find a good, solid, double-handed grip, cheek-weld and tucking the buttstock firmly into my shoulder along with setting the rest, bags and rilfes up higher (a more erect sitting position) to be just the ticket for these and larger cartridges such as .375H&H, .458 Win. Mag and above. Have Fun making your choice. Wait.....! I venture you'll enjoy this cartridge to the point of re-considering this to "We Band of 9.3er's....." Cheers, Number 10

The fit of the rifle is also going to impact the felt recoil. I have had three 9.3x74's, two doubles and a drilling. The drilling is the lightest, the Chapuis the heaviest. Because of changes in the way I now have to hold them, I now find the Chapuis hits harder, the drilling much less so. In the drilling, it feels like my 35 whelen. In the Chapuis, which used to about the same, it feels like a 3 1/2 inch 12 guage. I've found this 9.3 to be a lot friendlier both off the bench and in the field than the 300 and above mags with top loads; They feel like a mad girl friend slap, to me. The 9.3 is more like a 35 Whelen with 250's. I really like that No.1 in 9.3. I think Ruger got that one just about right. A nice handy rifle, in the princess of calibers. Good for whatever haunts your dreams. Bfly Work hard and be nice, you never have enough time or friends.

In a light Ruger #1 I would expect the recoil to be sharp. Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. thanks for the responses. I also just found out that Ruger will make a run of 1S in 300 H & H. next year. It is my understanding that these will have the 26 in. barrel
