For a update, I want to say I was on the phone with Dave Gentry today talking about this rifle. I had Remington 700 in my mind and was talking about his three position safety conversion. As we talked he gave me straight scoop no BS, even though it cost him a sale on parts. I appreciate honesty, it cost him todays sale, but guaranteed I will by parts from him in the future, nuff said.

I found a different action today, which I am going to use, I pretty sure I'm not going to get the accuracy I was hoping for as its a CRF Mauser type. But the feed issue is solved. I still think if its built right I'll get sub MOA. Ill let ya know as it progesses.

I must admit, making it a 280 IS the simple soloution. No flies on that round and it would give you the extra punch you want.

G'luck

Have you considered something like a 280/(AI) on a Sears FN Mauser or even a Springfield action?

Springfields, hmmm I got one in a 06 that my Dad customised 40+ years ago. Really a nice rifle an A3-03 with 2 lands and grooves, and in todays dollars about $1000-1500 worth of stock work. ( yeah I'm from a family of gun nuts ). I will never sell that rifle, its accuarate and beautiful, and has sentimental value to me blown way out of proportion to is actual value. But as a hunting rifle is at best OK. Not my favorite action by any means, its workable but not right. Very hard to quantify why it will never be a favorite rifle but its not, never will be. Its all done right in the day, and it has about every trick that could be done to a Springfield, it just doesn't float my boat.

A older FN is definately in the radar, Sears, Penny's both did them. Parts is an issue, I absolutly don't want a shotgun style safety ( yes I am real stuborn about that ). I would prefer an old Belgian commercial FN if I go that route.

Tommorrow is a hunting day for actions, the territory sucks though I am on travel in Southern Kalifornia, and I know all the shops down here, and their selection sucks on a good day and then they want 25-40% premium when you find something worthwhile.

If all else fails my fallback option is Montana Rifleman, my smith knows him and we both are aware of his actions. But that is the last court of appeals, I don't want a "cast" action either. I think some patience and research is due. I could get into this now but I just don't figure $1000 before I rebarrel, smith and restock is reasonable. I did notice the Browning that was listed, just can't justify in my mind $1200 for a project gun that I can't shoot .25 MOA consistantly.

Who knows maybe I'll get lucky tommorrow.

Steve64,

I looked into the 7x64, not really a bad round, and I actually know where there is a BRNO in this chamber. I am less than motivated on this gun though as it is Kalifornia prices, and I just can't justify spending a additional $200+ for a scope that is as useless as tits on a boar.

I really isn't a very practicle cartridge on this side of the pond, essentially its a 280 Remington, but it might outsurvive it in the long run.

Actually although the 284 Win is the apple of my eye, I am enough of an engineer to question these kinds of details. There are issues in my mind, like will I be buying 6.5x284 brass in five years because the 284 has a foot in the grave and not likely to recover from it.

For the curious, I bought a BRNO ZKK-600, and am negotiating on another action. I am really going to go back and look at the 7x57. If you have been following my thought train on this thread, is was always the standard, I never disliked my old 7x57 ( in fact I love it and will never get rid of it ), I just wanted a little more.

I have a couple of months before I order barrels ( plan on ordering more than one) and I will bounce this around a couple of more times, but right now another quality 7x57 sounds like common sense, and when I get the urge to play with the 284 case I will fiddle with 6.5x284 ( look at the lapua 139 gr bullets ) This in a really rigid action and a 28" tube sounds like a better plan. Actually I am leaning to just ordering two barrels after the holidays and I think a mauser 7x57, and a Remington 6.5x284 are whats in my mind. First let me get the actions in my hands, I am a hands on kind of person and looking at details, makes my engineering decisions a lot simpler, and tends to weed out the mental massage.

If you like the rifle that well and aren't going to ever sell it, I'd keep it and hunt with it till it's a mass of dings and bluing is gone. I used to worry over every little dent, but now I can look at them and remember when the worst ones happened, usually on a good hunt, so what the hell, I don't care anymore. The ones I really like are the most nicked up ones in the rack, they're the ones I use.

That's not fair to leave us hanging, what action did you choose?

Did you decide to use the Mexican?
