That's a pretty rare one. What's the price?

They called them Express Rifles. They're pretty much an RSM in non-African calibers.

Very close to the same gun in same caliber as the current Ruger African. If you like it for the style and/or features you can buy new for less cost. Available in 338 and 9.3x62 which offers an interesting trade off in reduce range, heavier bullet and 1 more round capacity.

I own one in 7mm RM. It is a great rifle with many features generally on ly found on custom rifles or very expensive rifles. Mine shoots under one MOA and kills I believe that if I coul great even out past 300 yards. I wish I had several more in other caliobers, they are no longer made and were made in 300 Win Mag and I believe 30-06,

1450 is overpriced. You can get the big RSM for less than that. I seen plenty of them in the 900-995 range over the past few years in 270, 30/06 and 338mag., but there is one born everyday....suckers that is.

agreed thats a heft price for that rifle. I saw a 375 RSM with a pro bedding job and a timney for 1100.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

The flat sided receiver just turns me off. They just don't look right. I have rebarreled enough of them to know that finding one with a receiver wall (since it is not a ring) that is much thicker on one side than the other is not uncommon. My guess is that they got heavy handed with the grinding on one side; maby thay had to to clean up the casting marks.

They have gone up some in price over the last couple of years but that is still high. Of late they seem to be around $1100 - $1200. I was tempted by one last time I was home. The new Hakeyes lack the wood, quarter rib and sights IIRC. Nice rifles and much nicer IMV over the fat-a$$ed RSM, which of course ain't available in the same calibers. Apples and bricks I believe.

Note the new African has a cross bolt which seems a nice functional detail over the forearm tip which is an easily mass produced cosmetic. The 1/4 rib is very cool though. To each his own.

I am actually a bit surprised a rare model would only be a few hundred over sticker for the new gun? Not many Ruger collectors out there?

The RSM is discontinued now Frowner It was a shame they never offered an RSM light option. I think they could have got it down to near 8 pounds with a modest effort for the 375. At that weight would have been oportuniy to add a 300H&H or Wby. IMHO, The they also missed a good bet with limited run RSMs in 450Rigby and 404 Jef to name two and in the heavy profile, no changes needed.

Actually I've had excellent results with Ruger handguns.....and especially the single action revolvers and I consider them the best out there except every one I ever owned went to a trigger job immediately.

I owned three M-77s and a #1 consecutively and every one was a failure in either feeding, stock warping, safety malfunctions and the #1 that didn't shoot better than 3" at 100 yards...

Hell....other than that they're just fine! thumbdown

At least the older rugers looked good (I like the one in the pics). The new rugers look dull and plain, I like the high polish they used to have. My experience with ruger rifles mirrors that of Vapo's.

Like them or not, Ruger seems to be the most successful firearms mfg. in America at the moment. Easy to do a search and see their sales volume and profits generated and regardless of the mfg., without those key items, future is quesionable. I don't care for their pistols much, but revolvers whether double action or single action are tough to beat for the dollar.
That RSM is one of the best values ever produced by an arms mfg. and the No.1 is in the same category. Granted that the earlier barrels by Ruger were sub standard, but today's offerings do quite well for sporting rifles.

I own 11 Ruger model 77s in 338 wm .They all shoot under an inch at 100 yards and most under an inch at 200 yards .I have hunted with them for 25 years and taken 130 head of game with them. The old Tang saftey model is my favorite deer gun .I shoot it like a fine double .I have shot lots of running deer .I love the 338 wm Ruger 77 .When its nastey outside I turn to my stainless laminated Ruger 77.It has a weight that makes it kick like a 270 to me.Ruger puts the right weight barrel on their 338s whinchester and remington put too thin and light of barrels on theirs. You wont go wrong using a 338 wm on any big game in North America .

Sounds like you still own them all. Why 11 of just one caliber/cartridge over 25 years? Inquiring minds just want to know. Smiler No judgment on my part, just Curious.

I belive I have 10 or 12 Rugers rifles in the house right now.

I well buy more when a good chance come up. Thats along with another 5 or 6 ruger hand guns.

I think they are one of the best buys on the marget.

+1

I own two Sako L61Rs in .338WM and I think I have too much redundancy.

I can't see what's not to like about Rugers after putting 200+ rounds through one of their Hawkeye's with no problems whatsoever with sub MOA accuracy.

Nice jacket & scope mounts in with the price too.
