I saw that the Remington 710 is Chambered in both these calibers and I am debateing on which one to buy the rifle in. I personally have not shot either of the calibers but my friends have said good things about both so what do you recomend. This rifle will be used for deer and long range target shooting. Please do not buy a Remington 710. This is one of the worst designed guns in the history of firearms. Do a search here on this and do it in other forums.
if i were you with your budget i would suggest something like a used model 700 bdl in 7mm mag. can be had for under $400. much better choice for your requirements. a used 700 is a much better investment than a new 710. IMHO woofer

For deer hunting and long range shooting at targets, I'd get a .270 Winchester. It kicks a little less than the .30-06, shoots a little flatter, and kills deer quite dramatically - especially with 130 gr. bullets at 3100 fps. or better muzzle velocity.
Forget the Model 710. It's the rifle Remington never should have made in the first place, simply because the quality is abysmal. Go to a big gun show or local gunstore and you'll find any number of pre-owned, but mint condition push-feed Model 70s, Remington 700s, and Ruger 77s for about the same price as a Model 710.
For example, my local dealer has a Ruger 77 (built in the 1970s) in .30-06, complete with a 4X Leupold scope, for $350. That rifle is dead-mint - as if it came out of the box yesterday - and unaltered, plus it has beautiful wood for a production rifle. There is no comparison in quality or value between that rifle and a 710 Remington. Buys of that sort are out there to be had, and by the score: All you have to do is look past your local volumn retailer to find them.
270 and 30-06 are both great cartridges. almost a blonde or brunette question,
However, the Remington 710 is not even a good choice.
I will sell you a 1982 model winchester model 70 Ranger with Leupold scope in 270 for the price of a new 710: $ 365. It has killed two black bears, two dozen mule deer, and four elk. Nothing hit has ever escaped. That would retain its value forever if you take care of it.
For some other information on the 710: check out this reference:
Around here I've bought a number of nearly new Stainless Win 70's for around $375. I currently have a 30-06 fwt and 7mm Rem Mag that pobably had no more than twenty rounds each through them bought used for that price. Personally, I won't ever buy a new gun again... ok, never say never. If you have any patience and negotiating skill you can find what you want fo 40% less than the new stuff.
I wouldn't give $75 for a 710 let alone the outrageous amount of $400.
By a CZ American in either caliber !! you will get a mauser type action, all steel rifle with Turkish walnut underneath there finish and it will shoot !! And as far as I am concerned there better out of the box than any of the other comparitively priced manufactuers products. You also get a set trigger when pushed forward (nice for range work) and if you buy the American model you will get free scope mounts. I own Two CZ's, have another on layaway, and have ordered another on top of that. I would not care two hoots if CZ were the only brand I could buy in bolt guns & Marlins in lever guns

You can't go wrong with either round. If I was you which I ain't, I'd be goin' with the '06, but that's just my opinion. Much better bullet selection. I sure as shit wouldn't be buying a 710! What A POS! Find a used Rem or Win, you will be REALLY glad you did. If you definately want a new rifle, you might look at a Savage, pretty nice rifles for the money.

WOW I thank you all for your input about the 710 it sounds like a POS. I went to the savage website and im inpressed with the looks of the weather warrior series and if it shoots as good as it looks its a real winner. Im going to go with the -06 Because of a better bullet selection and extra power. Thanks Again!!!

Tough choice between the calibers......270 will do fine for everything up to deer/black bear, and will take elk with good bullets (Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame).
The 30-06 is a LOT more flexible, and has mass-produced match grade bullets available if targets are a serious consideration. The 270 bullet weights pretty much give out at 150 grains, while 30 calibers can run to 220 grains. Finally, if cast bullet shooting is a factor, by all means make it a 30-06.
Rem 710--forget it. If dollars are a consideration, look at the CZ-550 line of rifles. Hell of a rifle for the money, with single set trigger, controlled feeding al la Mauser, and decent iron sights on some variants.

What exactly makes the 710 so bad, seems everyone pretty much unamiously agress it is a POS. The guy at the local sporting goods store was saying something about how the bolt lugs lock directly into the barrell, sounded kewl I guess but what do you guys have to say???
