Without knowing how you are going to use the gun, it is difficult to make helpful suggestions. Is this going to used for hunting in mountainous terrain or flat ground? Open plains or thick cover? Fair weather or foul? What are your accuracy requirements? Medium game or big game? What is your budget? George

What is it with the 300 Win Mag that you are not satisfied with, that you hope to achieve by switching to a 300 Wby Mag?

Very sensible question, Erik - even though we know the lust for toys does not always follow the paths of common sense... If you decide to build a .300 Wby on your M70, you'll have to get a new mag box (or modify the old one - remove mag block), new follower, new ejector (assuming your action is CRF) and a new bolt stop (I believe). You'll have to think about whether you can source these parts in Norway. As far as barrel length is concerned, a .300 Wby is most sensibly fitted with a 26" barrel. In my exuberant youth, I converted a M70 from .300 Win Mag to .300 Wby - I guess I fell in love with what the ballistics tables promised. Later I converted back again, as the .300 Wby was (sadly) a bit much for me. But for people who can shoot it, it is a great cartridge. These days, I get 3200 fps from my .300 Win Mag using 168 grs TSX bullets, and that will do pretty much anything a .300 Wby will do. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... Mike, The same happend to me too once upon a time. I found it fine to shoot though (in fact, my wife even borrowed it to shoot her first few plainsgame animals in Zimbabwe, as she was a good shot with it), however, after shooting a handfull of moose with it, I decided that it ruined too much meat. Even with bullets such as Swift A-Frame and Trophy Bonded Bearclaws. This was at ranges between 40-250 meters. The speed was just too high IMO when it comes to our moose (which is all about meat). I was (am) much more happy with my 375H&H on moose, even out to ranges such as 250 meters. So I'll continue to leave the "supercharged" rounds such as the 300 Wby to other people. And I am sure that the 300 Win Mag can generally do anything a 300 Wby can do with the proper handloads.

I have a 24" barrel on my 300 Weatherby Vangard. I have often thought about rebarreling to a 26" but it shoots great now. If I were starting from scratch it would have a 26" (maybe 25") fluted SS barrel. (I just like them) Mine kicks like mule but recoil doesn't bother me (yet). I just figure it's good practice for when I finally get a .416 of some sort Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

itis the short cartridge in a long receu+iver and midway norway has plenty of parts ,all original m-70s. i must have read a bit too much about the famous big game hunters after all. i saw a remington once that was used for mountain hunting, that rifle was better as a benchrestrifle. it had a thick and long barrel, and a good ,but heavy mc millan stock, but it shot very good. and i like the 220 grs bullets and i dont like to push them deep in the case when iam reloading them.

it is a m.70 crf classic sm, so there isnt much that is needed to do with it.

OK...one at a time
Purely a personal opinion.....24" #2 contour sporter would be my choice. (See Douglas contours) also a blued barrel is my choice as well.
Synthetic since you don't want walnut. Look to McMillan or Bordon Rimrock
Leupold 3-9 ultralight....a real sweetie.
I suggest you double check this as the 300 Weatherby requires a longer action than the 300 Win Mag and you might find a surprise in there. The action work might be more than you want.....especially since the real gains in the 300 Weatherby is very little over the present 300 Winchsster chambering you already have. Real gains are no more than 50 meters per second.....is this worth it? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I have the 300 RUM and it will shoot as good as the WBY and most of the time better. At 200 yds I shot a 3/4" three shot group and at 600 yds I shot the bulls eye with one shot. That 300 Rum is some rifle.

Switching a new Classic to take full lenght rounds is nothing. I've had a couple done, take out the spacer in the mag adjust bolt stop and ejector and you're good to go. Whether it's worth it is another matter. Make it a .375 or .340 if you want more.

alright, it is the long action for 375hh lenght of cartridge. ive wanted one for a while, but since there is noe norwegian weatherby importer and winvhester has closed its doors, they made them in custom shop, but i know of a good gunsmith who has build many different weapons through the years. i think ill go for a semi varminter style barrel and a matte finish douglas would be fine.

mr rigby I have a Remington 700 classic a .300 Weatherby. It has a 24" barrel. I say very close to a number 4 contour. No long Weatherby throat. It's is for me just the right weight to carry hunting. I think that the heaviest barrel I would recommend would be about a 5. The gun shoots very well with 200 gr. bullets and IMR 7828 very close to 3100 fps. The load I use is the Max listed in Nosler number III. I’d say you won’t be sorry if you build it or the .300 Winnie both are fine guns. Both zeroed at 200 yards the Weatherby is only about 2.7 inches flatter at five hundred than the Winnie not enough to worry about. I’d say it’s just a personal decision.

well i have too andmit, im a little bittle bit like Charles Askins, i dont like the 3006, (sorry about that) and neither the 6,5x55 either. with a 30 cal, i`ll want something with a little more push, but for genearl use i like the 8mm cartridges. i have a 8x57is that is very fine. but when tah tbarrel is shot iout (groups like a orange at 100 meters) i have thougt about change it too either a 8x68s or a 8mm wildcat based on a 404 jeffery shortened down too 68 mm or a dakota case with a 8mm bullet in. ill think the 8/404 would be super for me.
