Ah Pdog, my fav. bullet in my 338-06. I started w/ RL15 & IMR4320. It does well w/ any powder in that burn range. Then I tried some compressed laods of H4350. It is now my powder of choice under a 210grNP. Work upto 62gr-63gr for 2750fps. I use CCIBR primer & Norma cases. sub moa for three shots is the norm. I could get that w/ 53.5gr of RL15, but the groups were not as consistant. I need to now work up some loads w/ the 210grTSX. I see monometals as the future of hunting in the USA (unfortunately).

A friend wants little more then his 06 for a elk round but is afraid of the magums. I figure my 338-06 about right Mine has a 27 inch barrel about 9lbs with scope. should give him a bit more punch with out the recoil of a 300 or 338 mag.

It will be a pussycat at that weight. The longer bbl. will also give you quite a bit of extra vel. That H4350 load will probably go 2850fps in your longer bbl.

I have had good results with 4064 and Ramshot Big Game with 210 Noslers and TSX. Load a grain less powder with the TSX for the same velocity.

SOunds great, what are your pressures like? I find IMR4350 a bit fater than the H4350 & I prtty much max out @ 63gr.

P-dog,

Looks like you are on track already w/ 4350.

I have had very good success with RL-15 and 210gr NPs and
TTSX's. I found 53 grs works great in my rifle.

Good luck.

From 1984 thru 1999 I saw lots of Colorado elk get dropped by hunters using 30-06,300wm & 7mm mag rifles. A friend of mine was the exception he used a Ruger #1 in 6mm to drop running bull elk with neck or head shots.

Scr83jp some times its not what works its is what one wants. He has killed elk with his 06.

I most likely never needed to buy another rifle after I brought my first 06 40 plus years ago. But what fun would that have been.

I have dies for over 50 some calibers the last time I counted them. I guess it would have been a lot easier if I would have stayed with one rifle, one pistol and one shotgun gage.

I guess I might not understand what you are getting at are you saying the 338-06 should work just fine as does any of those calibers you mentioned.

That is also my RL15 load. I get about the same vel as the H4350 load, but the compressed H4350 loads is just a bit more accurate & more repeatable.

There ya go, neck or headshots are not always possible. I'm sure his outcome would have been diff. w/ body shots & a 6mm. The 338-06 kills equally well w/ head & neck shots as well as being superior w/ just about any bodyshot including hard 1/4 shots. Better than a 200gr 06, probably not, but like pdog said, where would the fun be if we all just used an 06? nilly

Just in case you'd like to try something else. I've had good luck w/IMR4064 and Nosler 200gr Accubonds on Bull and Cow Elk full penetration on all broadside shots out to 300 yds.Like Fred H4831 is my go to powder for the Nosler 210 P.

It depends on the COAL,using the standard boxed Mauser,I was unable to get a compressed load of H-4350 up to speed. I found the burn rate for 210-225 to be two grains faster than 4350class and four grains slower than 4064class.Big Game(my choice),N-550 and the new IMR-4007 all fit the bill for a case filling powder.
