Husqvarna M98 Stock Replacement?

I have a (new to me) commercial M98 Husqvarna 9.3x62. The rifle shoots MOA with a healthy dose of R-15 and a 250 gr Accubond. So far, so good. Recoil off the bench is brisk but certainly not bad at all. No issue. Off hand shooting, however, is another story. Length of pull on the stock is 13 3/8". My bench technique (grip of the stock wrist) is quite differnt than how I grip the wrist when shooting off hand. Not until my first off hand shot did I realize my trigger hand thumb knuckle is but a fraction of an inch away from my nose when I shoulder the rifle. When the rifle is fired, my thumb knuckle drives straight into my nose...thought I busted my schnoz on the first round! I don't have this problem with my other rifles. My favorite stock (McMillan Edge Win 70) has a 13.5" length of pull and my thumb knuckle is no where near my nose when I shoulder the rifle. With all that said, I need to restock the rifle and I need to keep costs down.

What say you on recommendations?

The stock is what makes Husgvarna sporters so pretty so I hesitate to replace it on the first go round. Have you thought about using a thicker recoil pad to increase your 9.3's length of pull? It'll be a lot cheaper than restocking. I've had other rifles inclined to punch me in the nose with my own hand so I've taken to leaving my thumb on the bolt side of the grip (which is also better placement for rapid manipulation of the bolt). Good hunting!

Brownells and others sell spacers. I had to put a couple on 9.3x64, it's a pssuy cat to shoot and really comfy.

If your Husky has a walnut stock, I'd try to salvage it with a different recoil pad and spacers. If it has a beechwood stock, I'd look on ebay or one of the other auction sites for a 98 Mauser take-off stock, maybe a JC Higgins or something else, something that fits an FN Deluxe. You can slim/reshape/glass bed if necessary.

Thanks for the replies. Stock is Beechwood refinished in a hand rubbed tung and wax finish (quite striking)...already has a new Kickeeze mag recoil pad installed....which I believe is 1.25" thick. I'll search the sites for a take-off stock or maybe purchase a decent (but affordable) synthetic like a Bell & Carlson or some such.

You might want to look at a Butler Creek stock for the FN style Mausers. I have two rifles sitting in them and after I reinforced the hollow forearm, with a piece of 1/4" angle iron and filled the hollow with expanding foam, did the same to fill the hollow butt, I have one very nice little rifle that also turned out to be extremely accurate. That rifle was just a strictly stocl J.C. Higgins M50. Another commecial FN I have has the same stock, but witht he forearm solidly filled with glass bedding. Bit of a mistake as it made the rifle very heavy, but it too is quite accurate.
s to the Husqvarna, I have the 640 in 30-06 in a barreled action I picked up to be a donor for something else. I'll be using the Butler Creek stock for that one as well. They just happen to fit me quite well.
I'll grant you they ain't a McMillan but then again, they're nowhere near as heavy, at least if you fill the hollows with foan and not epoxy.

I put my Mauser 98, 9.3x62 in this Butler Creek plastic stock. The stock is a cheapy but it actually fits me pretty well and handles well. I painted it up with a sand texture spray can finish and then some clear over that. It sands my face a bit under recoil but nothing to worry about.
Mine has a super light 20" barrel and the whole idea was keep it light and easy to carry so when I bedded it I only bedded the recoil lug so I wouldn't add too much weight. I have really good accuracy but the trade off is the recoil!
I'll buy you a Butler Creek if you want to trade me your Beech stock (?)

Thanks PB...

SS...Lloyd contacted me via a PM about a stock sale so should I decide to sell the original, and I am not so inclined right now, he will get first right of refusal. If I do sell and he is not interested, I will give you a holler.

For now, I just plan to restock but keep the original.

Thanks again for the info.
