.><_______ These avg out to 2460 , and the chrony was @ 20 feet from the muzzle .

That gives me 3800 ft lbs with a pretty good bullet ..
I haven,t group shot this load yet but I really hope it shoots well ...
Rifle only weighs about 7 1/2 lbs scoped ...

This rifle is going to get some weatherization work done to it and it will doubtless become a good hunting companion ...

I just need to figure out which stock to put on it .......

gumboo....

Good stats. My 20" tube is giving me about 100 fps less; most of the loads around 2360 fps.

I've tried H-4895, IMR-4320 and VV N140 in the 9.3x62 simply because those were the three medium burners I had on hand. All three powders with Speer & Nosler BT bullets shot one hole clusters at 100 meters. I now use the VVN140 simply because it's easiest for me to obtain.

Good Luck with your Boomer, it be a good one for sure.

..Gerry , without moly tumbleing the bullets 55.5 gr or H 4895 was my top load which gave me 2300 fps also with the 285 gr Lapua bullet .

With Moly coating I can go up the 2 1/2 gr more and the velocity rises also .. .
With the Lapua brass the primers are a little flatter than with the Norma brass , but not bad ...
,., Extraction is good . I imagine this is a max load , One subjective test I did with moly tumbled bullets and plane bullets was run 5 rounds thru the rifle and grab the barrel .
With 55.5 gr ,and 285 gr bullet , if I would have hung on , I would have burned my hand , with moly and 58 gr. of powder and 285 gr bullet ,the barrel was just warm , and not very ... I know it is subjective , but my velocity goes up and the potential for throat erosion goes down ....

gumboo.....,

Your expereince parallels mine pretty closely.

YUP! My intial load try for the 9.3x62 was 55.5 of H-4895 with a Speer 270 grainer and gave me clover-leaf three shot cluster in the middle of the X-ring at 100 meters with my Bore-Sighted Rifle right outa the Starting Gate. Nice way to begin with a new rifle/load. Now using 55.6 grains of VVN140 with similar results.

Since then I doctored the Speer 270 grainers with judicious use of my Forester Case Trimmer and some modified Drill Bits turning them into 250 grain Hollow Points. 200 of them were then Moly-Coated prior to me selling my Moly Tub, Ceramic Media, the Moly Powder and Barrel Coating Liquid. They shoot great but haven't dome your "Heat Test" equation though.

I'm a Lefty so modified a Bell & Carlson Mauser Stock from Right-to-Left with some Steel Bed & Spray Paint. Made up into a nice "lighter", quick-handling rifle with the Millet Red Dot; especially when compared to my two 375 H&H's.

Use the rifle almost exclusively for Driven Wild Boar/Red Stag Hunts and with my modified Speer Bullets it's a Piggie Basher of the Highest Order. I'm pleased....

Have Fun with your 9.3x62

I too have a short barreled 9.3x62 (20").
Today I chronographed some loads with Speer 270 grains and Norma 286's and PRVI 285's, all with Ramshot Big Game powder, CCI primers and Graf brass
62 grains of powder with the 270 gr. SPeer gave 2363 fps.
62.5 grains with the 270 Speer gave 2400.5 fps
63 grains and the Norma 286 grain bullet clocked 2392 fps
and my fireforming load of 60.5 grains with the PRVI 285 grain bullet averaged 1850 fps.
All these are averaged from 5 shot strings.
Mine is built on a Mauser action and a 20" barrel like I said. I have a 2-7 Nikon Monarch scope on it.

Looks pretty good to me, that shouldl do the trick on about anything IMO...

My all time favorite is a 286 gr. Nosler at 2520 FPS in my 26 inch barrel and a jug full of RL-15. I also like the 320 gr. Woodlieh at just a hair short of 2400 FPS, thats right up there and competitive with a 300 gr. .375 at 2500 FPS., thats also pretty good.

The 9.3x62 is a really nice round and does a decent job on anything that walks, talks, breaths or crawls..and it can be loaded to within 75 FPS of the 9.3x64 and I like the idea of that...

I've done a fair bit of searching and found several threads discussing charge weights and particular bullets, but what are y'all using for COL with these loads? Also, I've seen a lot of back-and-forth on magnum vs. standard primers in the 9.3x62, which do you all use? I've got some once-fired Prvi brass, 285gr Prvi bullets, a pound of Big Game and some WLRM primers, and I'm looking to start working up a practice load for my Ruger African.

Thanks!

Thanks much!

I saw a similar COL on the Realguns.com site, but every load manual I read had max COL set at 3.291 or 3.290", and they had theirs out at 3.305". I'm still really new at reloading (in fact, this will be my first rifle load), so I was pretty leery about going out of bounds.

I'll load some up to 3.305 and 3.330" with a lower charge and work up from there. Thanks!

Also, do you crimp at all with your 9.3 loads?

I haven't yet crimped.
I'm not having problems in the magazine with creep or pushing in.

There are several methods to find the length of the throat on your rifle, find out what yours is and proceed from there. I've read that most 9.3's have a long throat so they can handle the long 320 grain bullet.
Your Ruger sounds like an excellent rifle, wish I had one!

I have a M 70,rebarreled to 9.3 x 62.
I have done a whole lot of research AND loading to try and get the same results as others.
Barsness likes Big Game & Ray has had success w/ RL 17.
I started w RL 15 and standard primers. Shot great, but too slow in MY gun.
Now, I'm using RL 17 and magnum primers. Shoots great and the speed is better.
Barsness says up to 65g of Big Game w/ the 286g.
*********Start lower and work up ! Your gun may NOT handle that much.**********
Good luck.

I would have to agree with Ray, especially with the use of RL-17. No powder I've tried can match it, but it does work best at what appears to be max pressure.

What speeds are you talking for the 9.3 X 64 ?

How does Varget (AR 2208) work in shorter barrels? I like it best in my 24 inch Simson.

Well, I think I found a load my Ruger likes.

Once-fired Prvi case, WLRM primer, 285gr Prvi bullet, COL around 3.302, and 59.5gr Big Game.

Just barely sub-MOA @ 100 yards
