I bought a new Kimber 84M in 7mm-08 Thursday and shot it with factory loads then and handloads on Friday.

The groups with Sierra 140 gr Pro Hunters were outstanding. With 47 grs of IMR 4350, CCI Br primers and new Rem brass it grouped two shots into .63" at 200 yds and a made a second three shot group of .755" again at 200 yds. It's rare that I get groups this small with any rifle at that range.

Hornady 139 SST's did not do well nor did factory loads the day before. Well the Federal Prem. 140 gr Ballistic Tips did do 7/8" at 100 yds and 2.4" at 200 horizontal but it was very windy Thursday.

This is the Classic model with the walnut stock and matte finish steel. The rifle weights an ounce under 6 lbs without a scope or mounts. The factory mounts however are steel and so are the Leu. rings so that adds a quarter pound. Add a 11 oz scope and it should top out at about seven pounds. This is a nice, classic looking CRF rifle. Sort of a baby M 70.

The trigger is outstanding and it breaks like glass with no travel or backlash at four pounds which is plenty light for my cold weather hunting.

When I get some dies I will work up more loads. These were just made with new Rem brass and a .308 Win seater.

I was looking a 84M Classic in 7mm-08 at Gander Mt. it had a beautiful piece of wood.I really liked it but it had a trigger lock and I didn't really get to fondle as I would have liked too.
So let me pick your brain a minute.
Does the bolt open on safe?
Does it feed and extract/eject ok?
What scope do you have on it?
What did you pay for this rifle?
How long is the magazine box?
Thanks rws2

The safety is only two position and locks only the firing pin. Friction holds the bolt closed.

It feeds very well and the tiny rifle holds 5 in the mag and can be depressed to close the bolt over the fifth on a sixth in the chamber.

This is a true CRF action. Also it will leave the ejected round in the action on a slow bolt action and eject it fast also.

The only problem with this rifle is a heavy bolt lift. I called Kimber and they said to send it back. I may after the season but if the rifle continues to shoot as it did Friday nobody's getting their hands on it but me.

The best deal around here seems to be $819 or $850 with the bases. Then I walked into a shop in CT and they were $825 with the bases. I did not ask for a further discount and the clerk threw in a box of Partitions free and on a credit card to boot.

The way to buy one is to look up the dealers on Kimbers site and call them to see if they have the caliber in stock that you want. If you order it you may be stuck with wood you don't like. Some stocks have knots in them that I don't like.

Having seen the NULA rifles I would order this one as it costs far less. If I were rich I would order both and have the Kimber now and for a backup. By the time you get a custom rifle made and adjusted your ten years older it seems.

Forgot the scope question. There is a 3-9 Conquest on it now for fun. It's way too big and will not go far enough forward to be perfect. It seems that any regular Leu variable would fit fine.

I don't know what scope I may get but I have to pick soon. Maybe a 2.5-8 VX111 matte. Then it would go on other rifles anyway. I read that the compacts are touchy on eye alignment. I want some maginification as almost all of my shooting is at the range.

The magazine is 2.8" long and the throat fit's the 140 Sierra just right obviously.

I have a lot of rifles sighted in and loaded up. This is the lightest one by far. The others are old style "Featherweights" in M 70's and Savage 99F's that go 8 lbs scoped.

A buddy bought the same rifle maybe a month ago. His is very accurate. He claims to have shot several under an inch 200 yd groups with 140 gr ballistic tips and Varget. I gave him a box of factory RP 140 core loks and he didn't get better than 1 1/2" out of them at 100 yds. Apparently his handloads ALL shot well.
I'm waiting for the glass stocked Montana to hit the shelves.
