Had an old box of Speer 145 grain boat tails laying around that I couldn't get to shoot very well out of any of my various 7mm's. Thought I would use them up plinking with my new 7mm WSM and these things realy group well at 3,050 fps., better than anything I've tried so far!
Now, Anybody have any hunting experience with this bullet. Are they tough enough to use for hunting at over 3,000fps? If so, what game would you limit them to?

Don't worry about how they will hold up at 3000 fps muzzle velocity but rather how they will perform at the velocity they are moving at when they hit an animal.
You have a long range rifle and a bullet designed for shooting distant targets. They will perform just fine on deer sized animals that are at least 150 yards away from you. If they are any closer shoot them in the ear.

I load that bullet for a friend's 7REM mag. It is wonderfully accurate and he hunted with it all last year and shot near 300 of them. The recoil is softer being a lighter bullet and that also adds to the decent shooting he has done with that combo.
He never got his deer last year so I can't comment on how it held up but I'm with the opinion that it has the potential to be very messy. Because of that we are now going to start running some tests with 140gr. Interbonds. The wieght is almost the same but the bullet will hold up.
I'm loading for 3 different 28 cals so I'm going to give this bullet a serious look.

I can get an easy 3000 FPS plus out of my long throated Brno 7x57 with 52 grs. of H414 and the 145 gr. Speer bullet..It has always given me complete penitration on broadside shots on mule deer with about a 3" size exit hole. and it will stop on the off side of an elks rib cage most of the time fully expanded and perhaps about ready to slip the lead...Kills very well. It is as good a bullet as a non premium can get...that said I would prefer the 150 or 160 Noslers for anything bigger than deer.

I'd expect them to expand rapidly and make a big wound channel inside 250 yards, where they would still be smokin along at 2600 fps. I'd suspect core/jacket seperations would happen and a lack of penetration when bone is hit.
Should be ok for game up to the size of caribou or cow elk if you avoid bone and bad angles.
Steve One of my 280's shoots the 145 gr speer better than any other bullet. With a max load of 4831 it gives me an honest 3100 fps from a 24 in barrel. All I've shot with it are deer and the 145 gr bullet performs very well.It may not be the best choice on heavy game but it is dandy on deer.

Shoot Prairie Dogs with them.

I load them in my wife's 7x57 and she shoots antelope, mule deer, and caribou with them. I would tell you that they slip their cores, but we haven't found any of the bullets, so I don't really know...
I've shot several pronghorns and a number of mule deer with them from one of my .280's, and the few bullets I've recovered were nicely mushroomed and held together. I prefer Grand Slams for bigger game, but I've had great success with Speer boat tails on deer and suchlike.

I had a box of these in the .308cal 180gr form. From my -06 they shot very accurate at around 2775fps ( far from 3000fps). When I got them I e-mailed the company to ask if they would be good for black bear and deer, and he said yes. I hit about a 200-225lb bear right in the shoulder (it's where I was aiming for and my guide watching through bino's called it on the shoulder just above center) on a broadside shot at 217 yards. The animal fell to the ground and stated thrashing and groaning, and before I could hit him again he was into the trees. We followed up and found 2 drops of blood and after a day and a half of scrounging acres of woods found no sign of him. A week later I tested them at 100yards in newspaper. The result was 6" penitration and nothing left but bird shot.
I read some time after this, you always here things after you learn the hard way, that the BTs are made with a softer core and if I remember, a lighter jacket. The writer did not even recomend them for light deer. I found they were great for porcupines and paper punching. I do a simple test other than the wet newsprint to test some hunting bullet. I shoot big raccoons and porcupines with them. If it will explode a 30lb. critter it aint going to hold up any better on deer or bear.

Here is an area where one must be carefull, I have found that you cannot compare one caliber to another in any given make of bullets..I have not seen this discussed on these boards before but trust me it is a fact...
I have used the 130 gr. Speer flat base bullet on deer in a 7x57, 284 and 280 and its an excellent bullet, but I know of no other 130 gr. bullet thats works well in a 7mm on deer size game at high velocity....
I have had great success with the 250 gr. Sierra in the 375 H&H, but 250 gr. Sierra 338 caliber has failed me miserably on some big game animals....
Every bullet maker of standard bullets has better bullets in certain calibers, and lesser poorly designed bullets in other calibers, and all we can do is gleen them apart by using them...
This doesn't seem to apply to the premiums and for sure not the super premiums...Makes a good case for premium bullets.
