I have a nice M70 in 270 so I can live without a 6.5-06 or 264 WM, but I still want one of each. I would also like a 358 Norma even though I have a 375 H&H and a couple 9.3x62s. I better stop before I talk myself into a couple more rifles.

I agree on the 358 NM. I have one, beside my 375 H&H. I also have the 308 NM and a 6.5X55. The 358 is the most used as a hunting rifle. The 3006 stays in the safe for no reason, great caliber but I really want a 8mm mauser. Big Grin

In terms of need vs. want, I have 16 or 17 centerfire rifles, but could easily make do with 1 or 2.

If I only had one, I'd take my 6.5x55, which could handle game up to elk in a pinch, and handles the deer I most frequently hunt admirably well. Loaded with lighter bullets, it will work ok for coyotes and groundhogs too.

For two, I'd pick my .30-06 and my .22-250. Then I'd have a lighter caliber for varmints and a medium caliber for everything else.

Agree Ted. I lived with one rifle, my Rem 700 BDL in 270 for over 35 years. Now that I gave it to my youngest son, I have two, my CZ in 500 Jeffery and my Rem XCR II in 375 Weatherby which my youngest son is claiming since I promised my oldest a LH 375 H&H when he gets out of the Rangers

As long as I have my 500 Jeffery I think I have it covered. I'll just keep my shots on elk and deer under 300 yards...

It's nicer to hunt with my boys than have a lot of rifles ...

I need a nice English double rifle in 450 / 400 as it will cure this burning empty feeling in the pit of my stomach that I have had for over 35 years - since I handled a pair of Wesley Richards sidelocks on a beat shoot in India in 1976.

I need a Genuine M98 sport3r in 404 Jeffery or 10.75X68 with octagon to round barrel & full length rib - as my Simson 9.3X62 is feeling lonely in the cabinet for the last 7 years.

At one time I had stockpiled a whole bunch of actions, 3 Argentines, 2 G33/40s, 5 Pre War Mod 70s (short/long actions) and 3 transition Pre 64 long actions. Was gonna build this and that.......

Then I started to do a lot of hunting.

Funny thing, I kept on using the same 3 rifles, a pair of .270s and a .300 Win. Can't see myself needing or wanting any other calibers. Oh I've got some big boys and some pea shooters, but for 90% of my hunting, that's all I need.

I've got a matched set of .270 & .300 Win coming any week now.....imagine that........prolly done after that.

Only thing left for me to do really is replace my Pre 64s with Pre War actions.

I've always wanted a 270 Weatherby, maybe in an early SouthGate FN Mauser action. You guys are a really bad influence!

I had what I needed by the time I was 20 a 22rf-223 and 06.

Its been all want from then on 35 years later I try to kill one big game critter with each non varmint cal when I buy differant one.

I have been loseing, hog hunting has helped. I find for wis deer I fall back on my 99 savage in 300sav for me about the perfect woods deer rifle.

This years elk hunt my 338wm is going instead of my 300wm why because I can.

But then I have a new to me 270 that hasn't been bloodied oh my it might have to wait for late doe season.

So many guns so little time.

The ones that interest me the most right now are the 9.3x74, but I have a 35 Whelen and a 375 H&H, so it would just be for conversation purposes.

The 7mm-08 and 257 Weatherby look good, and one of those might be in my future, especially the 7mm-08 because my wife could use it.

I already have a Model 94 Winchester in 38-55 that I enjoy, but the Lyman Sharps in 38-55 would be a damn fun gun.

I'm thinking:

.338 Lapua or Norma for ultra long range fun
7 mm WSM

The 7 may be the most unnecessary, as I have others that bracket it.

I am building another 6.5 Creedmoor for hunting that I'm pumped about! It's going to be a super-light weight version made by Score High. 24" light contour Brux stainless barrel on a 700 action that will have all unnecessary metal removed, Bansner 23 ounce stock, nice little Leupold with target knobs.

Can't "weight" to hand it to a buddy after walking all day when we cross a fence and see the look on his face!

You may be interesting in the latest edition Guns & Ammo, they just did a half decent test of the 6.5 Creedmore with a 26 inch barrel. They had the loads with a variety of brand of bullets.

Lemmee see... I need another 9.3x62, synthetic, CZ,with the pop up peep, nitride coated metal. Quick de-tach rings, all purpose nasty weather vunderthumper, yadda yadda... Definitely need a 500 Smith, with the 8 inch barrel.. Every good boy deserves a 416 Rigby, gonna need one a those.. Been bad mouthing the .338 for years, but,...338 Lapua. Tried one in a Savage this summer, and I want one. There I,ve said it. The cartridge, and the rifle. Long range Hunter.. My dad had a Savage when I was a kid, guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. Find myself strangely drawn to the 300 H&H. But the one I absolutely don,t need the most is the 505 Gibbs. Suspect it,s gonna take a few years to get Ma Bear talked into that one..

Well I've found a 300 Weatherby in an early Southgate model that's built on an FN Mauser action with at Weatherby 3x9 scope on it. If I buy it this weekend I'm blaming all of you guys!

I certainly don't "need" any more guns.
In fact, I tell myself that "this one will be the last one - don't need any more"
Then, as is inevitable, some damn gun comes up which I must have. Some buddy drags out a long hidden rifle, calls, and says "remember that...? well, I think I might want to sell it..." Or, a lowball bid at an auction actually wins! Now, bullets, brass and dies are in order of course... More reloading stuff for another caliber I didn't have before. This is spiraling out of control!!
Still, I have no idea why one would choose a self imposed restriction on the number of guns or the chamberings they are in. Like eating your favorite dinner every day from here on, would get pretty boring no matter how good it is.

Sorry Ingvar for the light response. I know I mentioned if I ever sold it, I'd post it here first, but I still plan to take it to Africa. It will be a few years before I'm willing to part with it and have to offer it to my youngest (right handed) son first.

Picked up a rifle yesterday (M70 Feather weight in 270 WSM) on a pure impluse buy. Why? Cause it was there. I havent followed the WSM calibers closely at all. I'll probably work some loads up and such. But, I'll still grab the 7x64 during deer season.

My two cents :

Need: Hunting North / South American Continent, with widely ( easily ) available source of acquiring loaded Ammo & or Good Hunting Bullets!

Hunting Long Arm:
1. .22 cal Rimfire (Scoped): Small Game Hunting; Low Cost Target Practice/Marksmanship Training.

2. AR .223 cal : Med Game Hunting (CEB Bullets)

3. 30/30 Leveraction : Med Game Hunting (CEB Bullets)

4. 30/06 : Main Big Game Hunting Rifle (CEB Bullets)

5. 45/70 Leveraction : Big Bore Hunting Rifle (CEB Bullets/North Forks/Barnes)

6. Shotgun 12 gauge Rem 870 : Bird / Rabbits or Big Game (Dixie Slugs)

Hunting Pistols:
1. .22 Rimfire
2. 9mm
3. .357 Mag

I don't think anyone would really " NEED " anything more !

Although.. I do have (WANTED) a few more !

A 270 WSM and 375 H&H is all you need anywhere I think.

Cant argue there. Big Grin My main deer rifle is the 7x64 and Elk the 358NM. The '03 30-06 usually goes along as an extra in both cases.

I used to own a few smaller bore magnums; three 264 WM, a 270 WBY, and a M70 in 300 H&H. I kick myself that I traded that 300 H&H. The smaller bore magnums kind of fell out with me when I started on 06 based wildcats.

The now 358NM started off when I found a nice sporterized M98 at a pawn shop. Someone had sporterized the mil stock. Barrel was pretty good. I had a gunsmith chamber it for 8mm-06. I liked that caliber and was going to mess with the AI version, but never got around to it. Still got both set of dies too. I decided to rebarrel it to 35 Whelen. Messed with that for a while. I just happened to be at Paulson's in Tacoma (they were reworking the trigger on the Krag) and we got to talking about the Whelen. He said if I ever wanted to convert the Whelen to a 358 NM he had the reamer. I brought him the rifle the next day. There's a pic of it on a different thread.

I turned in my 338-06 AI to get it converted to a 338 WM, which is currently in progress. It's on a interarms action. I just dont have the time for fire forming anymore. Besides the 358 covered it. Got a bunch of fire formed brass though and dies of course.

The 270 WSM from what I read so far seems to be a fine cartridge and I'll work up some loads after this hunting season. I usually target one bullet weight for a caliber and I'm looking at the 150 for it.

Well I just kind of rambled on there. lol
