I want a 300 win. To me its the best allaround north american BG round. I am of the poinion that all the American mass prouduction rifles are sort of hit and miss, You will probably get a decent shooter with a Model 700, 70, or 77, And that new savage american classic would probably be wonderfull. Don't like the newer Tikka rifles, but a sako might work. I reakky want to see the long action kimber ! If I can get one for under a grand and it is as nice as I expect it to be i will be all over one of those. I could get a barreld action from MRC and have Either a Serengetti or Acuracy innovations stock done. I prefer a CRF type action and I prefer a wood stock and I really don't care for stainless actions. But None of that is written in atone. Lots of choices there what do you think ? tj3006 freedom1st

Thomas, Go with quality as it will give you far more lasting enjoyment and far less headaches. The Kimber could work, and CRF is a classier way to go, but is preference. I agree that wood is nicer, but for a working hunting rifle I have gone to laminates. I have found that of all the things I have tried, the best purchases were those of the highest quality available. Best service, highest satisfaction, best longevity for product. As to your choice of caliber... I concur! Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! Take a look at the Model 70 Super Grade III. I think they are a great looking production rifle under a grand!

I'd buy the Savage or a 700 CDL if you want a blued rifle with wood stock. I've had good luck with both. Niehter are CRF, but they've been the most accurate rifles I've owned, and are reasonably priced.

Ruger MKII stainless and plan on putting a trigger on it. Most factory rifles get the job done out of the box some are realy dogs, some are real gems. Most are in the middle and with a little work they can be made into fine working guns. I like working on guns so it is no brother to me to do trigger and stock work to get them to shoot. Having to replace barrels is a lot more trouble and expense. But then I don't need a .5 inch rifle for most of the hunting I do a 1.5 inch one well do it. Not that I don't like very accurate rifles I have some they are a joy. But it real easy to get caught into very one should shoot .5s I was shooting one day with avery accurrate 223 and then picked up a 06 I shot a couple of groups with that. When I looked at the groups trough the spotting scope I said dam this 06 is shooting big groups. Well when I went up there the 223 was shooting about .375 groups the 06 under a inch. Was the 06 a bad rifle no it just easy to fall into I need real tight groups to get the job done when most of the time on big game a 1.5 to 2 inch rifle well do most naything out to 300 yards we need. Sure .5 and under guns are great but I well not be giving up my 99 sav that is about a 2 inch gun. It is just joy to hunt with and I have killed lots of deer with it. So the morel of this rant is decide what you real need out of a rifle and buy the one that you like best.

Lots og good opinions here, and i thank you for them. The only thing I would reject that has been mentioned is the stainless ruger. I could end up with a ruger but it would be blue. gotta get my W2s and see how much of my tax dollars i will get back...tj3006 freedom1st

I don't know about the vanguards. They are good rifles but I just don'y like the way the feel, in my hands. Don't know why I forgot to mention a CZ 550. can't find one around here exept varmint and african rigs, but the one i have in 7X57 makes me think one in 300 win would be great ! ...tj3006 freedom1st

thomas Look around for a good used Model 70 Classic with a G serial number under 300,000 and the little screw in the cocking piece. These were built before all of the major troubles started to happen at Winchester, and they are good guns. I have three, one .300 and two .338s (one blue and one stainless) and I wouldn't part with any of them. Best of all, I got each one used in mint shape for $400 or less!

I can highly recommed a Blaser R 93 in 300 Win Mag. I have 2 different 300 Win Mag bbls. Both shoot very well. I have never had ANY feeding, extracting, or ejecting problems with my Blaser. I have hunted in rain [serious Alaskan rain], dust and snow. It is the ONLY bolt rifle I have 100% confidence in. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Although it pains me, rem 700 is a good priced highly accurate rifle. A higher grade Winchester is a good buy, had a bad winnie last year (production stainless). Ruger 77 mk II is a good rifle, very strong, may or may not be a tack driver. Trigger work will be mandatory on any of the three. Sako makes an unbelievable rifle, and very nice looking, LOP tends to be set for taller folks and can be a little pricy, but you get a match grade barrel and a trigger that can be adjusted (for pull weight) with minimal fuss. I have two in stainless synthetic (30-06 and 375 H&H) and would highly reccomend them. John
