I came across a gun dealer on the internet last night and they had the Remington Sendero in 300 Ultra Mag with a laminated wood stock for $609. Any opinions on this rifle and price? For me it would be my 2nd rifle, as I only have one now and it is a Browning A bolt in 270 Win. If I did go with the Sendero would I be better off going with the synthetic stock and/or the fluted barrel? Any thoughts and comments appreciated! Oh, I should say, this would be for elk and possibly mule deer.

It really comes down to your personal preference. I like the laminate Senderos but I also like the stainless ones as well. That is a good price on the gun, and if you like the way it looks I'd take it. It'll be more than adequate for the purpose you mentioned.

WH,

I priced them here in LA last year for 599 so, it seems that is a pretty good price.

The guy had one in 7STW and it was a very nice rifle. I almost bought it but, decided to go w/ a Short Mag.

Nice Rifle and a Good Price!

Good Luck,

I didn't realize they had the Sendero w/ laminated wood stock. Around here, it's hard to find Sendero's at the low cost chains, and the smaller shops want over $800 for them.

I have a PSS (very similar to synthetic Sendero, same aluminum bedding block) that is really ugly, but performed great for me in Africa. I prefer wood/blued guns usually, but this one seemed like the safe, smart choice for the trip. It's a .300 UM. I was so happy with its accuracy, flat-shooting, and performance on game with 180 gr Nosler partitions, that I have been thinking about a left-handed .300 RUM with wood or laminated wood as my next gun.

I'd buy the gun.

If its new, its a good price. But if used, you can find them for 500 dollars if you look close. I sold a 300RUM BDL SS for 530 dollars.

This is a new gun, and the price seems very reasonable to me, but then I haven't really been seriously in the market for a new rifle, so I'm not up to date on prices. I guess what I am wondering is are there any other rifles similar to the Sendero that I should be looking at? What I really want is a 338 WSM, but since nobody chambers a rifle in that cartridge (yet), it's not an option. Besides, the cartridge isn't really as important as the rifle. I want a heavy rifle, with a fairly heavy barrel, and I want it to be accurate right out of the box. I was considering the Weatherby Vanguard which in that case I'd have to decide between the 300 WSM, 300 Win. Mag. and 338 Win Mag. I don't really feel a need for the high velocity of the 300 Ultra, but I handload so I would probably only load it up to 300 Win. velocities, as long as the accuracy was still there. I'm also wondering what the disadvantages are to the laminated wood stock versus the synthetic (in the Sendero), if any. I sure do like the looks of that laminated wood stock, if nobody tries talking me out of it, I think I just might order one.

Washington Hunter,

I really thought the .300 RUM was overkill too, but boy was I happy with how I shot that PSS, even at very long range. And it was really effective, too. And I love those laminated stocks.

Like you, I also prefer heavier (steadier) barrels. The .300 (mine, anyway) is awfully accurate, too.

Can you tell I'm in favor of the .300 RUM on the laminated wood Sendero?

I was thinking of having a .338-06 built before I went on my trip. A .338 WSM does sound like a neat round to me, too.

Good luck,

Steve
