I bought a very nice Colt Sauer 300 weatherby and want to ask some questions to any who has some information.
Prior to this I reload for a light Weatherby mark V that was really temperamental in its results.
Is this (the sauer) a rifle with large freebore?
I have REL 22,IMR 4831 and IMR 7828 and plan to use some of these with 180 -190 grs bullets.
Have anyone some tips with this rifle and caliber?
I would appreciate any observation you do
Thank you very much

You will have to measure the freebore to be sure, but with a certainty of 99%, the Sauer will have the standard Weatherby freebore.

IMR 7828, in particular, is one of THE powders for the .300 Wby! RL 22 is not bad either. Make sure you load bullets that will handle impact at high velocity - Nosler Partitions, Barnes TSX, Swift A-Frame, or similar...

Formidable caliber, if you can handle the recoil. One of the best, and a true classic. The Sauer 80 (or "Colt Sauer" as it was known in the US), is a unque design. It utilizes extendable (rear) locking lugs and includes a loaded chamber indicator. I'm not aware of any other rifle with any of the two features. Because of the extendable recoil lugs, the (cylindric) bolt is as smooth to operate as any rifle I have ever tried. Some people experience problems with the rear locking mechanism (and flexing bolt) for high pressure cartridges, but others don't. I'm sure it will serve you well.

You should post a couple of pics of your new toy!

I managed to find one of the pictures.... Looks like a nice gun!

Internet works poorly here at my girlfriend's, otherwise I might have been able to post more. You almost did it right. What you need is the URL (Internet address) Photobucket calls a "direct link" - it will end on a .jpg...

You are getting ever closer Guillermo. It looks like you might have the right URL - ending with a ".jpg". Now all you need is to insert this into an IMG (as opposed to a URL) html clause. The "Display Image" button will do this for you...

Sadly, Internet at work is restricted for me, so I'll have to wait till I get home tonight to see the results of our combined efforts...

If you like Oberndorfs, Schoenauers and Sauers, you'll find plenty of devoted fans here.

I was under the impression that the Sauer 90 and Colt\Sauer were the same. Never heard of a model 80...could be before my time.

Yes, lots of freebore in my 25-06. And a slicker operating action is not to be found.

You have good taste in rifles, Guillermo.

Thanks
Onefunzr2, what do you use your 25-06 for?
I have a steir mannlicher luxus in that caliber and never use it because I feel underguned with him except for antelopes.
When I go hunting hogs or axis I first take a 6,5x68 ,270 ,or 264 or something heavier but is only the feeling ,I can't say I have some bad experience with it.

Not saying it is ideal but in my poverty stricken college days I killed half a dozen elk with a 25-06 and 117 hornady boattails.

There is very little difference between a Sauer 80 and a Sauer 90. The 90s came with lighter contour barrels. Other than that, I'm not sure if there are any differences.

I used to use another 25-06 for whitetailed deer for more than 20 years. I bought the Colt\Sauer used from a fella who took it to Africa. He sold it to me because his career became first priority. I took it back in '04 to use on Namibian Springboks. It did a fine job on these antelopes:

Guillermo,

Congratulations on a VERY nice rifle (IMO).

I have a German Forester friend who has the exact same rifle in 300 Weatherby.

I load his cartridges. RL-22. H4831, IMR-4831 & IMR 7828 are all suitable powders to work with in this cartridge.

Right now I'm using 78.0 grs. of H-4831SC with 180 gr. Barnes TSX's.

Yes, playing with the OAL is one of the head scratchers associated with larger freebored rifles. We're not getting spectacular pinpoint accuracy but @ 1.5" three shot groups will get the job done handily and with impressive performance, too.

Have fun with your new Boomer!

Cheers,

Number 10

I have a Sauer 90 in 7mm Remington Magnum. I know there is some differences between the 90 and the 80/Colt Sauer rifles, but other than whiteline spaces I donm't know what they are.

Nice rifles!

I want another one, but I am kind of open to caliber. A 25-06 would be great, so would a 243.
