I have a chance to pick up a Winchester mod 70 with a Boss in 7 MM Mag for a decent price. I have no experience with the Boss system but really like the rifle.

Any one have any experience with these?

Can it be removed?

Work just as good as the Browning Boss rifles. Get the CR boss for it if it doesn't come with it. CR stands for conventional recoil. (Can be purchased on Brownings web sight for $35.) This will keep the noise the same as a regular rifle and still let you dial in the boss. You should be able to dial the rifle in to shoot under 1" groups at 100 yards with the boss. All the ones I have owned have done this pretty easy. Just had one installed on a light Krieger barreled model 70 in 270wsm that wasn't shooting as good as it should have. Cut groups in half and now well under an inch. This with the easy cleaning of the cut rifled Krieger barrel is just about perfect.
The cool thing about the Boss is you don't have to mess with your loads to find the sweet spot. I just pick a bullet find safe maximum velocity load in that rifle and dial in the boss. I guess I'm lazy but I would rather mess with the boss than seating depth, powder charge, components etc.

What he said!

Works exactly as advertised and as described but it is loud. Got one on a 300 Win stainless just as soon as they came out with them. Like it still, but recoginze it's downsides (noise and additonal length). Get the CR add-on.

Save 15$ and find another place online that sells them. Gunbroker, e-gunparts.com, and even Amazon can produce CR's for 15-20$ all day long. Buying it from Browning is like getting your taillights fixed at the stealership instead of local Tom's auto repair. You pay more from the source for the same thing.

They DO work though, that is for dang sure. I was getting 2/3" 3 shot groups with factory ammo with my 270.

You know, on second though (I'm re-barreling that gun) if you end up picking up that 7mm and it is stainless, drop me a line, I'll sell you mine! They are all the same part regardless of caliber except for the 338 Win Mag which had a slightly larger barrel diameter.

Be sure to wear ear protection or you will be deaf. I was spotting for my uncle at the range and fired before I was ready and I couldn't hear a thing for two days!!

They work, they are ugly, and they bring down the price of any Win 70 rifle.
As long as you can live with how they look and you like the price go for it.
A 7mm mag with a BOSS would most likely sell for $425-475.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Yes they can!
Here is my .338 Supergrade had a BOSS and I liked the performance hated the looks so I had it "bobbed" off the rifle still shoots tiny groups.

I have an 06 and a 270 with the BOSS on them.. I actually love them...I picked up the Conventional NON Boss also for $10 at a close out somewhere..

a friend had a 300 Win Mag with a Boss also, he wanted me to zero for him... shooting 180 grain Rem factory ammo out of it and comparing it to my 30/06 with the same Remington 180 grainer in an 06 factory load, I was surprised...

the Boss reduced recoil dramatically more on the 300 Mag than it did on the 30/06.. both of us felt the 300 Mag kicked less...

just passing it on.. but both being the same rifles ( Model 70s) and shooting the same bullet (180 grain Corelokt) with factory ammo.. I was impressed how well it worked on Mag calibers...

Another timely thread this week. I have looked at a couple of Supergrades, but they both had the boss.

I too am in that camp Snell. How much barrel did you have to lose to have the boss removed or cut off?

I assume it was a 24 inch barrel like the ones I have looked at. I liked the rifles, but I just dont want the Boss hanging on the muzzle.

I can rebarrel the rifle, but for all I know one of these might be a heck of shooter.

Newtons law, equal and opposite...so on and so forth. The higher the pressure and more recoil, the more the brake works. Not just the BOSS but all brakes. On low pressure rounds, they don't do a whole lot worth the noise and blast. On high volume, high pressure, FAST kicking magnums, they can make a lot of difference. Good example is what you tried, 30-06 vs 300 Win...and if it was a 300 Wby or 300 Rum or 30-378, the actual reduction would be greater. Or, 375's....H&H vs Wby.
