Has anyone used the 320 gr. Woodleigh in a 9.3 x74R? The Ruger #1 has a fast twist (1 in 10") so I thinking it should work pretty well. Any data? Hunting experiences?

No but I have tried it in my 9.3x62 Simson M98. I get 2200 fps with AR 2208 (Varget) and it shoots 8" below the 285gr Lapuas with same point of aim. Good groups of 1.25" for 3 shots and a stiff recoil compared to the 285gr but not a problem at all. I guess the 9.3X74R should give very similar velocities and if regulated or used with scope, it should be adequate for Buffalo (IMO).

Used some the solids elephant hunting. Good accuracy. Just don't pretend that they are something they ain't!

Yeah, I'm going to be shooting 140 lb. whitetails in the timber, so I won't be stretching the cartridge. I think that they should shoot well and want some data...

what you do is to take the nominal velocity for the 286 gr. bullet, calculate its muzzle energy, and then using that muzzle energy for the 320 gr. bullet back calculate the velocity you should get for the 320 gr. bullet.

hence if the nominal vel. for the 286 gr. bullet is 2430 fps, then you should shoot for 2300 fps w/the 320 gr. bullet.

And archer or no archer, that's more than confucious ever knew.

A friend and I both shot 9.3x74s with 320 Woodleighs on buff in Zimbabwe last May. They both performed outstanding. For deer a bullet perfect for cape buff is probably a bit too much, I would probably go with the 250 or 286 Partition. But if your intent on 320s I would start about 58g of H4350 and work up.

3 1/2

I have shot quite a bit of game with my 9,4x74R's.

I can say that if you use the 286 gr Woodleigh Soft or the 286 Nosler Partition, they will work for ALL game from coyotes, to cape buff.

In fact for NA game under elk, to include 300+ lb hogs the 270 Speer works great.

I was thinking about the Speer option. The good thing is that they are cheap! Howvever, I was worried about the fast twist affecting accuracy. They will probably be amongst the first that I try when I get the rifle. Thanks for the info!
