Why aren't the 38 special and the .357 Mag RIFLES more popular with paper punchers. I've owned 2 and they were a blast. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

I've only shot handgun paper targets informally, but I believe that if the hole cuts the ring that you get credit for the higher score. A .45" hole cuts a ring with a shot further from the middle than a .35" hole does.

I've shot a .357 Marlin 1894 with an Eotech on a rail mount. I can't say the looks were attractive but it certainly hit what I aimed at & was fun to shoot.

I have a Navy Arms replica of a Winchester 92 in .357 mag. It's a lot of fun to shoot. My favorite load for goofing around is 5 grains of Unique under a 158 grain SWC. For hunting, I've been using 158 grain XTPs, but I may just load the casts up as hot as I can without getting leading in the barrel or losing accuracy.

I have not shot the 38/357 versions yet but I have owned a marlin 1894 in 44 mag since 78. It is a blast to shoot. I have shot loads from around 400 fps to 1900 fps Mostly cast boolits from wheel weights. Cast from a Lyman 429421 mold. Have killed chipmonks to deer. If there were bigger game around I would not be afraid to use it on them. Leo The only way to know if you can do a thing is to do it.

lever guns in .357 and .38 special are indeed a blast....have a ball....also are the old M-1 Carbines.....a truly fun gun to shoot. But not to be denied a great time are the 9mm, 40 S&W, and .45 ACP in the semi auto Hi-Point guns..... But lets be honest here....none of these are what one would pick up first for deer hunting or anything resembling a "big game" shoot.....and none of these are typical of a "match" gun..... Very few guns were ever more fun than an M-1 carbine I had years ago.....but it's practical use was lost on me.....possibly others too? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I am a frequent paper puncher with my 1894 Marlin, 1892 Win. and Ruger #1, primarily to keep in practice like hitting the bucket of balls at the driving range. On the practical side, the 1894 mounted with a reflex sight is my "go to" gun for whacking pigs on animal control hunts on the privately owned island of Niihau. The shooting is fast and furious. Self loaders are not permitted as a safety precaution. The 1894 Marlin cowboy assault rifle is the next best thing. The reflex sight is outstanding for target acquisition, especially in failing light. Geoff Shooter

Currently have a Handi in 357, fun to shoot, pretty darn accurate for an inexpensive rifle. Had a Marlin lever in 357, one rifle I wish I hadn't parted with.

A .357 mag out of a rifle is nipping on the heels if a .30-30, at least at relatively close range. It's enough for deer to 75-100 yards. It's also a decent gun for around the farm use, whacking an occasional groundhog or coyote. But I mainly like mine because I can shoot cast bullets cast bullets and it doesn't burn much powder.

The two I had were a 1894 Win and a custom built on a #3 Ruger 16 1/2" bull barrel. The Winchester was fun but lacked real accuracy. My wife could hit a 1/4" red dot at 50 yards almost every time. She really liked it over her 22s because it had a report that was nearly as loud as the rest of the guns on the line and yet had little recoil. I like that analogy about hitting golf balls at the driving range Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! I have a Winchester trapper 357. Feeds semi-wadcutters fine. That is a good thing because I pour quite a few from a Lee six-banger mould. I really like shooting 38 specials from the rifle. It is probably the best rifle out there to use for a first time shooter. Big cartridges, a somewhat exposed firing system, no recoil. Takes the mystery out of it for first time shooters. Most everyone likes it more than a 22 bolt gun.
