Starting a project and rather than blueprint and accurize a Remington factory action, I'm figuring on just starting with a custom action. From what I've seen so far, it's between the Lawton ( http://www.lawtonriflebarrels.com/Actions.htm ) and the Stillers action in TAC30 ( http://www.viperactions.com/ ), with a preference probably towards the TAC30 right now. Any experience with any of these or other custom actions that do it even better?

As for the gun I'm building, a lot is still up in the air but as of now I'm thinking custom M700 action with either a tungsten disulfide or titanium carbon nitride coating, an AICS stage II stock, a Rock Creek 5R barrel carbon wrapped by ABS, and maybe a Timney trigger. Caliber is still up in the air too, and it looks to be between 7mm-08 and the 6.5mm-08 (aka .260 Remington).

Anything yall got, I'd appreciate.

I have a Stiller Predator (M700 clone) with a Krieger in .308 and a Jewell triger. No complaints. I'd rather have one of these actions than a customized M700 (assuming I was starting from scratch). The colour of the bolt knob and the shroud differs slightly from that of the rest of the action (SS) - if that bothers you?

I know of a custom builder who has used the Stiller Predator extensively in a Lilja/McMillan/Timney configuration. Claims all the guns thus made shoot around .5" with the right torque on the action screws. I bought a .30-06 in this configuration from him, and he produced a .4" (3 shot) test group shot with Barnes TSX 150 grs bullets. I have yet to shoot this gun myself, at it still resides in the US.

It is hard to beat the Stiller Predator, for the money. Very smooth and tops in precision.

I am having Glenn Harrison the founder of Nesika build me one. His new company is Phoenix machine at www.boltactions.net Mine is for a 338 Lapua and he promised the most reasonable delivery time. GAP is using his actions for there Templer rifles and these are some of the most accurate sniper style -long range rigs around.

Stillers are great if you can get them. I just had a 300 Jarrett built on a Predator action and it is as accurate a rifle as I have ever shot that was over 6MM.

See this thread the targets are at the top.

That is interesting. I had not heard Glen was promising delivery of actions to retail customers (which is what I assume you are, pardon me if that is incorrect).

I ordered a short action, single shot, M700 clone about a year ago. But it was more in the hope he might get round to building one at some point in time. The last I heard from him, it looked like he was delivering parts (and actions?) on larger contracts. There was talk of 40X actions to Remington, sniper actions to Canada, and what not... I'm not in the picture regarding what actually happened.

Phoenix certainly has the skillset and machinery to produce some pretty nifty actions, that is for sure. I hope I might even see one with my name on it - one day...

Take a look at the McMillan MCR-T stainless action -- not cheap but it's a great action.

You might also look at the Borden actions..a bit less expensive but very, very nice.

Howdy,

I'd just buy an Ed Brown rifle in your choice of caliber.

Similar to rem action with three position safety, controlled round feed, top notch barrel, excellent stock, jewell trigger and best coating out there.

Adios

Look at Jim Borden's actions: Most all custom actions are excellent

Personally, I don't know why you'd consider the Timney trigger. With a nice project like this, why not a Jewell?

My humble opinion is that you could build 5 custom rifles where everything is identical except the actions, but even using the same smith, and you would not be able to tell one is better than the other. Nesika, Borden (with patented bumps), Stiller, BAT, Surgeon, etc., they are all excellent.

Hey Silwane...Looks like we're in the same town. I'm in sw FTW. I got to looking at the Surgeon actions and and some of their stuff and I'm pretty impressed with them. I like that they are already building around the AICS, so I might go with them. I'd like to actually see one in person, but who knows if I'll get a chance. And Doc, since this is my one no cost spared rifle, I probably will put the Jewell in it. Anybody had an AICS stage II stock? I'm wondering how sturdy they are with the fold, but its not a huge deal in a 7mm-08 or 6.5mm-08 since recoil is minimal. Also, how big a deal would it be to chamber a short round in a long action? Just thinking ahead to future weapons after the barrel burns out and maybe building in something a bit more potent. Thanks all.

I have a Stiller Predator in .260 with a Shilen barrel, Jewell trigger, and McMillan stock. Put in a HS magazine box which allows VLD bullets to be seated farther out. Am extremely pleased with the package. For about the money to customize and accurize a 700, you can get the Stiller which is a better action.
