I found a sxs double in a .35 Whelen that is in better than 90% condition (beautiful wood and no cracks or obvious metal scars). It has hammers, light scrolling, a Greener action, and excellent bores with express sights. I have no idea what is the twist. It appears to be a "guild" gun built it Germany with no discernable brand anywhere on the frame or barrel, except Krupp, etc. Would the .35 Whelen, being rimless, be a reliable caliber for a double? The asking price is just over $5.5K - is that reasonable? This is the first .35 double I have ever seen and it is an impressive and well made piece. Any information would be appreciated. I've been looking (dreaming is more like it) for a double in a 9.3X74R, but most are more than 2K than this rifle. Thanks - Mags

I'd spend the extra money and get a 9.3X74R. You may have a very difficult time regulating that whelen, as the bullets it was regulated with might be quite different then what you can find. Considering how odd the chambering is four a double, the gun sounds overpriced. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

I'd rather have the 9.3x74R. -Bob F.

A very odd double rifle, stay away from it. Sounds as if it has been rechambered from a 9mm black powder rifle of some kind. Check the proofmarks.

I would not be interrested at that price as I don't believe its original in that caliber, but it could be I suppose..At any rate I would never own a double in a rimless caliber...The tend to jumb the rimless case and lock up the gun, and that includes the 375 and 458s... I think that gun would be an excellent buy if it is in the condition you describe, PROVIDED IT WAS INDEED ORIGINALLY MADE AS A .35 WHELEN! DO indeed check the proofing and regulating markings! I would have a gunsmith cut rim recesses at the backs of the chamber, and make ammo for it out of 7X65R brass necked up (or 9.3X74R brass necked down & trimmed) to shoot .35 caliber bullets, thus eliminating dependence on rimless cases. quote: Eurogun Imports lists a Chapuis 9.3x74R in stock for $5,875. If it is the same one they have had for a while it is regulated for a smaller load than the usual 286 grain and may not have the integral scope mounts provision in the rib, but it is not much more than the 35 Whelen guild gun and is in the caliber you mentioned.
