After a week of lugging around my Remington model 700 XCR II in 300 RUM I'm lookin to get a light weight rifle for next year and was considering the titanium so for the people that have one whats the good and bad of this rifle? also another rifle I'm considering is a Remington model 7. Also what other light weight rifles should I look at? THANKS

I just finished a backpack hunt with my Rem Ti in 7-08. Scoped with a Leupold 3-9 compact , slung and loaded at 6#.

Plenty accurate for me with several loads going under 3/4 moa.

What's not to like!

This is one of the original Ti models , not the later/present model which has a heavier stock and barrel IIRC.

Back to the hunt... ended with a broken fibula dang it [!] but the rifle didn't let me down.

I have a Remmy TI in .270 Winchester and that is about as good as it gets. Good for 98% of the worlds game with the proper bullets, accurate and very lightweight. Yes, for another 2 grand you can get an ULA that weighs about the same and is no more accurate or better handling. On the other hand, I also have a Colt Light Rifle in .270 Win as well and it is very accurate, handles well but is not quite as light as the TI....but you can get them on Gunbroker for 600.00-700.00 which is not bad for what you are getting.

I have one of the older ones in 260 Rem. Very light, shoots bullets to 130 grains very well, and is quite easy to shoot.
I love the Weatherby Ultra Lightweight, same weight, longer barrel, blackend stainless, very comfy stock, and short bolt lift. I have and have had several and they all shoot excellent groups. I think worth the $$.

Quintus, you are correct about the Weatherby Ultra-lightweights...I have two, one in 30-06 and one in 338-06 both with 24" bbls and are suprisingly light, accurate and handle well, but they are not quite as light as the Rem TI. however they are very good rifles for the money and can be bought for $1000 or so.

The Tikka T3 Lite is worth handling. I have a 700 Mountain Rifle and love carrying it. I bought it after an all day march with a heavy Mauser left my arms sore.

that weatherby 338-06 sounds good they dont offer it anymore though

I am happy with mine - but the barrel was shot out after just 1000 rounds of .30-06 - so I have now a new Heym barrel in .270 Win.

I would say that the maximum recoil is a .30-06 out of this light gun - but it´s a nice toy...!

The 338-06 is not the Ultra Lightweight model. Its just the Ultra Light. The ultra Light weight only comes in non magnum caliber, and for some reason the 338-06 is lumped in there. I have a 30-06 ULW and the 338-06 UL, and the 338-06 weighs a full pound more, 6.5 pounds vs. 5.5 pounds for the ULW 30-06. Its still a great gun to carry as its a full pound lighter than the standard Rem BDL.

The 30-06 kicks harder than the 338 in my opinion.

You can't go wrong with the Remington Titanium.

Several years ago I had a model 7 .308. The short barrel made my ears ring every time I shot it. Sold it after one season.

I have the model 700 ti in 300 rsaum and love it. I installed a gentry 3 position safety and a jewel trigger. It shoots 1/2 moa for 3-4 shots but if it gets warm it starts to move the point of impact. I dont know if this is due to titanium and steel expanding at different rates with changes in temp. No matter however since I am hunting big game with it and not varmits. I also have a model 7 in 300 rsaum and it is a little heavier. the stock on the ti is much better than the one on the model 7 and I think it is an hs precision. buy one you wont regret it

I have a Rem Ti in .270. It's my favorite. In fact I just ordered a timney trigger for it. The only problem I had with it was keeping it from my son.

I did have a Weatherby Ultra light in 308. (it seemed to 'kick' more than my 30-378 Accumark) I liked the 700 better so I sold the Weatherby

33806whelen, I am correct. The Weatherby 338-06 is in fact an Ultra-Lightweight model...it's on the box end. What makes it so is that even though the barrel taper is slightly larger than the 30-06, it is still built around the smaller 6 lug action and not the 9 lug larger/much heavier magnum action plus the barrel is not 26" nor the heavier taper of the magnums. Yes, it does weigh a trite more but not a full pound. At any rate, they are wonderful rifles and we should be fortunate to have them. Still tough to beat the Rem Ti.

Agreed Woodrow. If they weren't so hard to find I would definitely have one. Eventually I'll find one. NOt sure but I think 308 or 7mmo8 would be my preference.

Two come to mind, but they're a little pricey, but well worth the money if one can save up for them:


First, the Sauer 202 Highland Model. Weighs only 6 lbs with beautiful grade 2 wood, slickest action on the market, and fantastic accuracy. I have one enroute in .308 for resale.

Second: The Steyr Classic Mannlicher Lite. 6.2 lbs, super accurate out of the box, set trigger, nice wood, waterproof finish. Got one in stock in .270. These are sweet.

I love my Ti in .260, it wears a 2.5 x 8 Leupold and shoots 120 to 140 gr. bullets very well. There is nothing I don't like about it. I have a Colt light rifle, a Ruger Ultralight, a 700 Mountain Rifle as well as some Sako's in my safes but the 700 Ti is the one I reach for.

The remington Model 7 is hard to beat. I had one in 7mm08 and stupid me sold it because I couldn't get better than a 3/4" group out of it. I know (young and dumb). However the Kimber Montana is a great choice too.
