Edge looks great. Yet if can't use Timney, change barrels or bolt faces then the Stevens 200 is better. Anyone know the facts on parts with the new Edge

I have owned a Savage Edge in .22-250, so I'll post my opinion of the Edge. The Savage Edge is a very accurate rifle with a very effective recoil pad. You can get them for about 275 $, but thereare issues. They are a little chincy, the safety is plastic, the trigger is stiff, and the detachable magazine is plastic. The plastic magazine worried me because it looked like something that would wear out easily. However, the Edge does point very well and makes a fine weather rifle, as you aren't hear broken if some unfortunate thing happens to it! As far as your question on Timney triggers, I have read of plenty of people who use Timney triggers for it. You can find loads of info on this if you go to Savage Shooters.com

I don't like the Edge, everyone I've held feels cheap. I have two Stevens and other than the stocks on them I'm very satisfied with them. I took a pronghorn buck at 300 yards with my Stevens 6x47 I built last week.

Every Steven's 200 I've picked up felt cheap.

I have owned a Stevens 7mm and it is as any other rifle; a steel tube chamber with a barrel and a stock. What makes a rifle "cheap" is the plastic stock and the 7# trigger.

No, every rifle is different. Even though I'm 13 I know the difference between a Winchester model 70 and a Stevens 200. The one feels like a quality rifle and the other feels like a cheap rifle. There is a certain "feel" to rifles, that causes you to realize what is cheap and what is not. There is no comparison between a Weatherby Mark V ( with or without a synthetic stock ) and a Savage Edge. They may both be accurate, but they are world's apart.

Yes the Stevens feels cheap. What I should have said was the Edge feels cheaper to me than the Stevens rifle. I bought my first Stevens 200 in .223 for right at $260 after FFL fees. I bought it because I wanted an affordable rifle that I could build a 6X47 on and the little Stevens fit the bill. I was so satisfied with the rifle I built that when I stumbled across another one for $300 wearing a 2-7 Burris FFII I couldn't pass up the deal. Yes I know the difference between a fine rifle and a cheap one. However I recognize what the Stevens and Edge are built for, and sometimes a more expensive rifle simply isn't needed. IMO the Stevens is leaps and bounds ahead of the Edge. I'll change out my stocks as better ones become available for the center feed actions but until then the stocks I have now work. The Edge will be to the Savage line up what the 770 and 710 are to the Remington 700.

The Stevens line is the old pre Accutrigger Savages. Not bad guns. I have a handful, and once you replace the stock they are very accurate. For me, a rifle is a tool. Not that I wouldn't own a "pretty gun" but that is not whay I buy them today.

Here are some groups I shot with my 6x47 with the original stock. Here is the picture of the rifle I'm doing it with. You can't do any of the modifications I did to my rifle with the Edge.

I do like the Stevens 200 as far as super cheap rifles go. I think it is probably the more durable of the 2 rifles. The safety doesn't look like it is about to break every time you look at it, that is the thing about the '200 that is superior to the Edge.

Hey Christian, I'd appreciate it if you would go tell your Parents old Hot Core is very impressed by your writing skills for a 13 year old. You are a rare commodity in todays world. Best of luck to you.

I saw a young shooter at the range shooting small groups with his $270.00 edge. First one I saw in use. It may be cheap ugly and less versatile but I've used worse before to get the job done. At the price it is a totally adequate first time hunting rifle for those with a modest budget. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! The Savage Edge is a good choice for young shooters whose parents are on a tight budget. However, if the parent can afford it I would pay an extra 25-75 $ and get the Marlin XS7/XL7 for the kid.

I think that the Marlin XL/XS-7 is a superior rifle to both the Savage Edge and Stevens 200, if you can get by with 1 of the 6 cartridges that the Marlins are chambered for. If Marlin's marketing team was worth a pinch of NaCl, they could expand the XL/XS-7 line and leverage the Savage Edge and Stevens 200 right out of the <$300 market niche. Jeff

The cheap, use it off the shelf rifle is kind of frustrating for a rifle nut. I bought an Edge in 243 for $270 including scope to fill my kick around, kid rifle, loaner niche. Of course I gave the scope to my son-in-law and bought an inexpensive but decent pentax 4.5-14 from Doug at Cameraland. I immediately started looking at the stock with improvements on my mind and started thinking about an after market trigger. It does what I got it for perfectly - my son's freind will use it next week on his first armed walk in the woods chasing deer and it won't bother me if it gets hunting dings. It has walked around in brush chasing coyotes but only bagged one bunny at 160 yards - hit right where it was aimed. Like a useful tool should.....but darn it I want to fiddle with it and spoil the economy of the purchase entirely.

I don't see any problem with the 6 cartridges they come in. They could bring it out in one of the new WSM's, .260 Rem, or the .338 Federal but I am not going to complain. They are the first company to make a budget bolt gun that doesn't feel too heavy or chincy.

I picked an XS7 in 308 as my cheap bad weather gun. I am extremely impressed with the rifle for the price. You can't get a better trigger in a $300 rifle. I used a $6 can of Fusion on the stock and some Duracoat on the barrel and action to weatherproof it. It looks pretty slick. Just need to take it to the range.

You should post this on the thread that is called " Marlin Rifles ? ". The OP wants to see some reviews from AR members on the Marlin X guns.
