Winchester 150 grains off the shelf (or was it remington corelokt?). Thats what I used to kill four Idaho elk. My son still gets less than 1 MOA with the winchester 270 ammo off the shelf.

Of course that was fifteen years ago, and now that I handload, went back to Idaho last year and did not see one bull good enough or close enough to shoot at!!

Nosler's 150 grain Partition and 56-58gr of H4831 should work fine.

Do not shoot Reminigton factory 150 gr Corelokt's! They chrono at 2512fps from my 24" barrel, on the same day I was shooting some 150 Nosler with 58gr's of RL-22 they went 3000 fps and made one hole groups at 100yds.

ZEKE sure is on the right track as far as I am concerned but I would use a Swift on a heavy animal like elk or if you have a real good (smooth) barrel I would use a 140-if you can still find any- Barnes X flat base, otherwise the 150 flatbase. That bullet killed like a 340 Weatherby for me in Africa. Seriously, but you will want to stay away from the boattails and try for a shoulder if you can, to get the bullet opoened up. Try 'em if they don't work go to something else but they ARE worth trying. Good Hunting, "Z"

Two loads that I have had good luck with are:

140 gr Failsafe, Rem Case, Rem 91/2 Primer, 56.5 grains of H4831 SC. Average 2830fps.
Reference: Winchester Data for Failsafe Bullets.

150 gr Partition. Rem Case, Rem 91/2 Primer, 57 grains of Re 22.
Reference: Lyman Manual.
No Chrono data on the partition load. It can be hard to get good sun conditions up here depending on the time of year and I couldn't get good readings the time I tried that load and haven't gotten around to shooting it over the chrono again.

Both loads shoot under minute of angle in my Ruger Mark II.

I did use the Partition load to kill a bull moose several years ago. 2 shots behind the front shoulder the moose never moved except to fall down.

First, congratulations on having a 24" barrel on your .270! Far too many manufacturers just screw on a stubby 22 incher and think that's fine.

I would start with a 150 grain Nosler Partition and H4831 (or you might find IMR 7828 more to your liking). RL 22 can be good, but the batches seem highly variable according to anecdotal stories found here on AR, so be cautious if you use it and stock enough of one lot that you don't have to worry about changing for a couple of decades.

The load which works in my gun is irrelavent to the one which works in yours; just start on the conservative side and work up to what seems right according to the various indicators. If you have a "fast" barrel, you MIGHT be able to reach 3000 fps at acceptable pressures, but think in terms of 2900 as an acceptable target.

A Remington with a 24" barrel? Which model would that be?

The only one I'm aware of with a barrel longer than 22" was the Sendero with its 26" tube.

I have several 270s, and my out of the box win 70 has a 24" barrel. Yeah most manufactures have the 22" its ashame.

160 gr Nosler Partition Semispitzer = 55 RL22 = 2880 fps = 24" Custom 98 = serious elk medicine = clover leaf accuracy. Based on experience with SC4831, IMR 4350 and RL19 - RL22 just adds something a little extra - velocity spreads in mine were as low as 4 fps - and I don't weigh every charge. Same experience with this powder using 130 and 150 gr NBT's.
