A buddy bought a 300 RUM, and is tired of: 1. Getting beaten to death buying factory ammo; and, 2. Getting pounded by recoil. So, he's looking to come up with some loads that will give around 2,800-2,900 FPS with 180 grain Hornady interlocks. Thanks in advance. R-WEST Load smart. Load safe. Triple check everything. Does he handload? If not,I would offer to trade him a .300 WM just to put him out of his misery. Personally, I like the .300 RUM, it just tears up too much meat.

R-West, i know what your buddy means. I have a 300 RUM also but i love how accurate it is. I also do not like it's recoil. I changed my recoil pad to a decelerator and it made a world of difference. I also load mine with 180 accubonds and partitions. I am using IMR 4350 at 80.0gr for the accubonds and 81.0gr with the partitions. Both are at factory specs listed in the Nosler manual. I get 1" groups with both and they are very manageable with recoil. Very much like a 300 winny. My crony reads the accubonds at 2950 average. I have not checked the partitions yet. I was never concerned about speed because i load for accuracy and this cartridge has out performed every winny i have ever owned. Hope this helps or gives your buddy a starting point.

Maybe he ought to get a 308 Win and start enjoying shooting again! DRSS(We Band of Bubba's Div.) N.R.A (Life) T.S.R.A (Life) D.S.C.

He doesn't handload, so we're going to work on some loads together. Thanks derf. That's the kind of intel I was looking for. R-WEST Load smart. Load safe. Triple check everything. Trade it for a 30-06. Put a brake on it.

I would agree that a brake would help. Just don't EVER fire it without ear protection for everyone within 100 yards. I put a brake on mine until I hunted with it and fired it without ear protection. I don't know who was in more pain, me or the elk. As far as recoil goes, I used to think mine kicked until I got a 375H&H. Now it don't seem so bad. Seriously, his problems would be solved with a reduced load. No doubt he could duplicate -06 or WM velocities and be happy but I've never explored slowing mine down. 91 grains of RL-25 with 180 accubonds is very tolerable to me in a CDL. I shot 95 grains for a while, but for a 'bama whitetail, the 4 grains show no terminal difference, but my shoulder sure does. Also, Remington offers there power level line. That is what he needs imho. See: http://www.remington.com/produ...evel-ammunition.aspx

Had a 700LSS 300Ultra for 13 years, used it in US/Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Mongolia, taken a fair range of animals with it. Had a removable Hart brake on it which essentially removed the recoil, an unbelievable reduction, recoil becomes a non-issue. Also had the Hart accurizing package. Most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned and maybe ever will own. With 168 accubonds it will beat .5” and with a few different flavors of barnes 168’s .7”. But over the years I’ve come to think of it as a specialty rifle mostly setting it aside the last few years, fun to take out with friends and shoot 500yds. Aside from a muzzle brake the most dramatic and easy recoil change is to go to a Barnes 130. Lots of people have done this and unless he has really big game in mind the 130 will be deadly out to 500yd on all deer, sheep, goat, antelope, etc. I used only 168’s because of larger animals and it is probably the only cartridge I have yet to recover any bullet, 15 to about 440yds. The barnes is really the right bullet at the velocity it produces. Didn’t seem to be any harder on anything than any standard cartridge. http://www.rwhart.com/v2/services.asp http://wittmachine.net/index.p...h=65&products_id=180

I don't think the 300 RUM recoil is any different than 300 win mag recoil. The 130 Grain TTSX suggestion sounds best to me. Other than that I would have to say get a 270. I have found Barnes X bullets seem to me to kick less than lead core bullets even the same weights. -------------------- THANOS WAS RIGHT!
