Hi all,

My dad has recently inherited a Sauer & Sohn Drilling in 16/70 7x57 R. The gun also has a Hensoldt Wetzlar - Davari D 1.5 - 6x scope with it. The original owner bought it sometime in the early 60's in Germany. The gun is in excellent condition. Would anyone have a ruff idea on what it might be worth?

Thanks'
Patrick

You have the correct standard chambers for the shotgun, a good cartridge for the rifle and a newer gun. It's worth something to the right person.

How long are the barrels?

I have a much older Sauer drilling, I doubt very much that it's as nice as your dads. My "buddy" told me it's worth $2500. I think it's worth a lot more to me personally after 34 years of use.

Savage 99,

The barrel length is 23 1/2 inches and the gun is in excellent condition. On a scale of 100 I'd give it a 97.

Along with that drilling he inherited another one. We dont know what make it is but it's 16 gauge by 8,7mm 72. He inherited Both of them from a German friend who died recently. This one is much older, it was his fathers. He did'nt know the exact year that it was made but his father had it when he was born in 1922. This one isnt in as good a condition as the Sauer.

The barrel has markings that say
8,7mm 72
Then 16 on either shotgun barrel
It also has 1 6 9 on the rifle barrel
It also has an oval with a star in it immidiatly Proceeding a K.m.G.

Thanks Again
Patrick

That barrel length of 23.5" is the same as mine and I consider mine to be the finest shotgun that I have ever shot. It's balance is superb and I can hit very well with it. Mine weights 7 lbs without it's 4X Hensolt. I also have a 1X Weaver for it with claw mounts.

I was lucky when I got mine that I went ahead and used it instead of "collecting" it. Now years later I am so glad I did instead of using some ordinary gun.

Have you fired it yet? Got any rifle ammo?

From $3500 UP, depending on ornamentation, quality of wood, etc. The Sauer drillings in 12/12-.30/'06 sold for $3500 up, when they were being imported here in the 60's and 70's (by Colt, I believe). [Big Grin]

Those Colt Sauers are heavy and not nearly as well balanced as a drilling with a 23.5" barrel or shorter. I am not sure of their bbl length but I would guess 28" instead of 26".

A memeber here by the name of Rackett just got a drilling with 20" barrels and he really likes the balance.

As a general comment I have no idea why shotgun barrels are so long. Many doubles are 28" and with the expansion ratio they have it cant be necessary.

'Bwana,
The two barreled one is called a "cape gun",and the rifle barrel is chambered for the 9.3x72R.Brass,bullets and dies are available and aren't too hard to find.Seller&Bellot still makes ammo for it.Ballitics are basically identical to the 35 Remington.
