Short action factory cartridges for game up to Elk and plains game.......?

If you were to have only short action bolt rifles, what factory produced centre-fire chambering[s] would you select, for game up to Elk and African plains game. (No Dangerous game.)

[added later in my post]:.....I d probably settle for .260rem and 300rcm.

All's I know about Aftican game, I learnt from travel brochures and hearsay but if a fellow was going to hunt everything in NA except the great bears, he's be hard pressed to find a better cartridge than the 7-08.

I love my 338-06's and the RCM is just that, in the short action.

What was I thinking.

I will never hunt Africa but my 7-08 with 140's will kill all of North Americas deer as far out as I care to shoot.....

Start it out with a .243 win, add a 7-08 Rem and top it off with a .325 WSM or 338 RCM and go hunting

I'd like to try the .270 WSM, as I've been impressed with my buddies. I've used the plain ol .270 for years on elk and it never let me down. I'd like to connect with an elk with my Savage 99 in .358 Win.

I'm not a fan of short action cartridges other than the 308 but to answer the question I think the 325 wsm is without doubt the champ in the short action category.

I've seen several times how effective the 300WSM is against elk, so I'd go with that.

.338 Federal hands down!

Honestly, though, a.30-06 does little that a .308 cannot do so it would be a good choice, indeed.
For little recoil the 7mm-08 would probably be better yet; and most flexibility .325WSM or .350 Rem Mag.

.308 or 7/08, either will work on elk-sized animals down. I could probably throw the .260 with them as well, although I like a 160 at 2700 fps from the 7-08 better.

I more I work with, shoot and hunt with my .308 the more I realize what a damn good cartridge it is!

Thats my first choice, 7mm-08 the second, .338Fed the third

I really like the 308 for a all around, easy to get--most are accurate and bullet weights from 100-to 220 grains.

I really like the 350 rem mag and my father in law has a nosler in a 325 that is pretty cool. Lots of knock down in a tight little package.

I will echo alot what was said here too. I like the 376 steyr. What a great round that needs a good platform to function in.

It is hard to beat the 308, for a short action cartridge. For elk and up I would use a 165, or 180 grain premium bullet.
My wife had no problem killing zebra, wildbeast, or giraffe with her 308.

IF you think you need more "thump" than the 308 then the 350 Rem Mag, would be a good choice, with 250gr bullets, I used to have one.

I am not sure if the 376 Steyr factory loads are under 2.80". If so that would be a good choice for a short action.

IF you do not really have to have a short action, but just want to avoid Magnum recoil, then the 9,3x62 is the way to go. It is a great cartridge.

I suppose it depends on where you are hunting those elk and plainsgame, but 338 Fed and 325WSM seems about right.

7WSM or 300WSM if you need more legs.

I'd probably go with 300WSM.

My dad's 300SAUM in his 700Ti has the following on it's ticket:
Whitetail
Elk
Impala
Kudu
Blue Wildebeest
Warthog
Gemsbok

That or the 300WSM would be my choice.

Definitely the .308 win. Buy it in a classic high figured wood gun or in a black gun like the FNAR or the DPMS LR-308L, all of the above will serve the purpose.
