Just picked up my barrels for my Tikka 512 in 9.3 X 74. I'm new to doubles and want to know if there is anything "special" I need to do or look for. I would especially like to hear from any Tikka or Valmet shooters on tuning in their barrels.

I will be shooting a few boxes of factory first, but then once I get my dies, etc. want to start loading. will be shooting pigs, deer, elk.

Thanks for any help guys!

TBT,

There is a book called "Shooting the British Double Rifle" by Graeme Wright, an Australian. Whilst he does deal mostly with British double he does touch on European ones as well and it is a wealth of information for anyone just starting out with doubles od any kind/make. Hope this helps!

A brilliant book indeed ! I have the second edition, and maybe even a third is coming forth. I most warmly recommend it - a true treasure.

Reloading data for the 9,3x74R are abundantly found elsewhere. The cartridge is still very popular.

Carcano

Thanks! I'll check and see if I can't find his book.

Shoot it and see what the bullet weight is regulated for. It will be 232gr or 286 gr Norma or S&B ammo. Shoot the lower barrel first and then the upper. Valmet says 2.5" @ 100 yds is acceptable. Mine does better and most will with work.
Be careful you don't wring off the screw: it's mild steel. Remember to loosen the front screw and retighten as well as the middle screw to prevent stress points. A little adjustment will move impact a lot. Go slowly and it will go OK. You should be able to regulate it in 20 rnds even if you've never done it before.
I found a factory duplication load of Norma 201 and the Nosler 286 gr partition. It stopped there.

Thanks Doc! Question though. Have you tried the RWS ammo? That is what I am trying to get so that I can reload the brass more than once. According to a shooting aquaintance of mine who shoots 9.3 X 74, he said that with Norma he was only able to reload once more.

I had some RWS and shot it early on before I was familiar enough with the rifle to comment on it as to accuracy. I'm sure it was OK 'cause RWS stuff usually is but they sure are proud of it!
I didn't notice the problem with Norma brass. I'm sure I reloaded some of it 3 times without inicdent. I went back recently and checked some fired Norma and S&B brass and neither of them have any ring inside the case. I know the Norma had been reloaded twice. I was using Norma 201 54.4 gr with a Nosler 286 gr partition. It shot to factory impact and duplicated the factory load in "Propellant Profiles".
