this is a gun my dad has had since he was young and really doesn't know what it is other than it chambered in 303 and it was a military rifle that he had sporterized. it was not a bad job other than the crappy side mounted scope mount that needs to come off and be the holes plugged. it has the letters RB on top of the chamber where the barrel meets and then on the side of that it says england and then has a crown on top of what looks like an intertwined Cp.

From what little I can see in the picture, I would say it is probably the Lee Enfield No. 4 Mk I. That would be the most common found today from the last war.

Lift the bolt handle up and the model will be stamped on the back action strap. The action has been modified with the charging bridge ground off unfortunately, hence that crappy side mount. There is a nice neat bridge mount available for the Lee Enfields but it needs the charging bridge in place. With a good five groove barrel these LEs were one of the best of the bolt action battle rifles made. Had the ten shot clip in mag which could also be charged from the top with 5 round charger clips. Still is probable the fastest bolt action to use and almost impossible to break off the butt stock as it has a massive thru bolt holding it to the action strap.
The saying goes that the 303 LE has probably accounted for more four and two legged game throughout the world. (and has probably wounded more of the four legged variety too).

No4Mk1. Your info may be under the mount. Lonbranch and Savage were on the left side of the receiver. My Longbranch is the typical 2 groove. Very accurate. The 2 groove will outshoot any other original configuration.

Hey! This is one of the finest service rifles ever made! The crown means something! When you use this rifle you stand with the Royal Dragoons at Mons where: The efficiency of the British riflemen was such that von Kluck assumed that the enemy were using machine-guns.
Peter.
Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;
sksshooter ,your fathers rifle started life as a Lee Enfield #4 Mk1 with the British army ,post war it went through the Parker Hale sporterisation process where the charger bridge was milled off and the metal tidied up ,they were a very serviceable inexpensive rifle.
cheers Pete
It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack; not rationality.
