I handled a rifle chambered for the 6.5X68 Schuler
and was ready to buy it when I discovered that there is no ammo!

No brass, nothing out there!

The rifle was not all that special anyway.

I just thought that we could get brass for almost anything. Not so!

Perhaps you could find some 8x68 or 10.75x68 brass and reform it?

Sav 99 You will not find brass for the 6.5x68 at Wallmart but there is some around. You can form brass from 300 Win brass if you can't find RWS brass. I have one. It is very similar to the 264.

When I read that RWS had dropped making it I got discouraged.

Somehow I thought the 6.5 X 68 was a regular European cartridge but I was wrong.

I have other rifles that overlap what the Schuler 6.5 will do. It's just that I thought I would have fun with something new.

The rifle is kind of plain except for it's scope! It has a 2.5-9 Supra on it which I liked the looks of. The action is an 'commercial' mauser not branded. The barrel was German and it has double set triggers. The stock was California style with an angled forend tip with white line spacers. I don't like that style. The checkering was a good skip line job but the pad was the old style shotgun type.

They were asking $1,095 for it.

Try here. 8x68S is the only other source of brass that will properly and easily form 6.5x68 cases. If you can find the even rarer 9.3x68 case, it'll work as well.
You could swage 375 Ruger brass and hope for the best.

The case is somewhat unique. A rebated .511 head and a .522 body tapering to .479, with a 2.66 length.

Hope this helps

Cheers
Bruce

Try Huntingtons. http://www.huntingtons.com/sto...17343&cat=275&page=1

As I said, not in stock, but carried. I've bought from Reimier Johannsen before too. http://www.johannsen-jagd.de/d.../katalog/katalog.php

8x68 can be used to form cases from and is much more widely available though still not something you are like to find at Walmart or the local Mom & Pop gun emporium. 8x68 can be found at the aforementioned as well as Grafs who also used to carry 6.5x68.

Z1r,

You say your links above have brass but they don't when you really look.

Besides, The 6.5x68 seems dead or stillborn. No sense in getting a rifle where you have to form brass from it's 8mm cousin that's also dead.

That Supra scope on the rifle was cool! Cool

m4220,

Thanks for the response. That's just it, it's not easy to get the brass.

Some seller on GB or Ebay has a box or so of 6.5-68 ammo for a good price. Not much out there.

As I said, if the rifle was special, really nice wood or in some other way I might bother with it.

Sheesh, I said at least twice, the links take you to the brass which is offered but OUT OF STOCK! So is most brass for most domestic cartridges.

Johannsen has it.

Please don't tell my 8x68 that it is dead. It might become depressed.

Just because brass isn't readily available for my .223 at the moment, does that make it dead too?

So, basically you're just pissing and moaning about a scope and trying to blame it on brass availability.

Where does Johannsen have it. Europe? How much?

It's just not readily available, I have about 15 boxes so it's not extict! Also have a bit of 8x68S so it's not exict either! If you don't want the rifle why not post a link to it here as there may be someone that does think highly enough of it to pursue?

Buffalo Arms also has 8x68 on hand. They can likely supply 6.5x68 as well. At one time they were selling x68 brass formed from 300 Win.Thats where I got the idea. I had ordered RWS brass and it was going to be several months arriving. To form 300 Win cut belt down to diam of X68 case (approx .524"). Rebate the rim to approx .512". Recut the extractor groove and use a X68 shellholder as a "Go" gauge. I ran that case into a 300 H&H size die and then into the 6.5x68 or 8x68 die depending what I was forming. Load and fireform. Takes a little work but it is a lot better than not shooting a rifle.

The Huntington link above is for the rimmed version. The rimless is still out of stock.

No....

The 8x68S is more popular than ever. RUAG offers more ammo than ever.

It is a very popular Magnum in Europe!

They still offer 2 loads in 6,5x68 and still produce brass for ist.

You can get brass for both 8x68 and 6,5x68 and the 8x68 is far from dead. Actually it offers 338 performance but you very rareley see an8x68 which is not accurate.

Biggest problem here in the US has been the intermittent availability of RWS brass. There have been some long periods here in which you simply could not find 8x68S, 6.5x68S, or 9,3x64 brass. Ich bin glücklich das mein Onkel noch in Deutschland wohnt. Big Grin
