The single Kimber that I had was a member of the +2" club, before and after I sent it back to Kimber. For sure that's the last one that will ever be in my safes. NRA Patron member

It's all about pressure, no way around it. High velocities = high pressure regardless of what your primer pockets and bolt lift tell you.

There's some truth in that, but it's not linear unless you're using the same case, powder and primer. For example, you can get higher velocity in a 270 using H4831 or Norma MRP with a 150g bullet at the same pressure level than loading with IMR 4350 to a lower velocity. Also case volume matters as well. In my 270 I neck size only, use Rem 9 1/2M (magnum) primers when loading H4831 or Norma MRP behind a 150g Partition. I've had my loads chronographed by other folks as well as myself at just over 3000 fps from a 22" barrel. I've been using this load since the early 70s. Here's some recent load data from Norma and Nosler for the 270 shooting 150g bullets. These are significantly more conservative (loaded lighter) than manuals 30 years ago, yet they still show over 2900 fps. To compare that to Federal factory VitalShok ammo loaded with 150g Partitions that I chronographed at 2650 fps, yuck. https://www.norma.cc/en/Ammuni...Data/270-Winchester/ http://www.nosler.com/nosler-l...data/270-winchester/ Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

Thanks for reminding the gang about the chronographs Chuck. Your 270 info is the same as mine, I get 3000 fps from my 270, with a 150 grain bullet using the same powders as you. I have been using these loads since the 70's too! Now back to this 30-06, after listening to some of the disbelief here about my vels, I sent the chronograph, an Oehler P-35 back to the factory. Their findings, it is spot on. Besides the Pact shows the same numbers within a few feet, so I guess our equipment is operating as it should. I knew this anyway, but felt more certification was in order, just to satisfy the group. Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

I know some of you have asked about brass life and primer pocket tightness. Well, we are on our 7th loading, fired the brass 6 times. After the 1st shot the brass was trimmed to 2.484. After the 6th shoot the brass was right at 2.490, and the primer pockets are still tight with Winchester LR primers, FYI! Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

I completely believe it. Especially since Quickload is an estimate of a guess that is manually adjustable. And it certainly has calculation adjustments for different barrels, right? I am glad you found a good load. I, like some of the others got a bum Kimber. If a 308 won't even shoot a 3" group for three shots at 100 yards, it goes bye-bye. I've had 3 Kimber 84 rifles and all were sub MOA guns. One 30-06 and tw0 .270s. My current 270 is the 84L and is essentially a one hole rifle with the Hornady American Whitetail brand in 130gr. One of my friends had a Montana in 7mm-08 that he claimed would not shoot and said he was going to wrap it around a tree. I asked him how he was resting it and he said in a Lead Sled. I suggested he take it out of the sled and rest it on sandbags and when he did, it started shooting under an inch. Go figure.

I have had 0 accuracy problems with my Kimbers as have the locals I know. They are real popular in Southern Idaho..Im sold down to one Kimber, blue and wood in 308 and its a real tack driver..All I hunt these days is Whitetail, Mule deer, and elk..my Afica days are all but over, hard trip on old bones and iffy heart..That said I may try for one more Buffalo before Im under the dirt! who knows. I've had several Montanas. The only one that was a bit challenging, with 1.5" groups, was the 7.08. The 1.5" groups didn't stop it cleanly killing several animals at over 250yds. Don't waste your money on a Mountain Ascent. The weight saving is minor, expensive, and unnecessary when compared with the standard Montana. The MAs that I have pulled apart appear to be individually bedded with what looks like Marinetex which is a definite plus, but that's a very expensive bedding job. Just get a standard Montana and bed it later if you wish. The front guard screws on the 84L are now the correct length. They were using 84M screws in the 84L for a while but the bean counters must have allowed them to buy a new box of screws.

Also, the silly looking coated stocks on MA's are two ounces heavier than Montana stocks! Matt FISH!! My 1965 vintage Win M70, in 30-06, is notoriously slow, shooting factory 180gr Core-Lokts at 2,550fps. I've always needed 1.5-2grs more powder to get book speeds. A buddy has a Sako and a Hart custom, both in 300Win. The exact same load/components will shoot about 200fps faster in the Hart, with no pressure signs either, but we backed it down about 100fps so I could sleep at nights. The Hart was my first exposure to a custom rifle. Even the 'bad' loads shot well, and the loads the rifle liked, well, they really shoot well!

K-22 Hornet. I have had the exact same experience as you, but with 2 factory Rem 700 223 heavy barrel. Same load in one is 200 fps faster than the other. Guys here who haven't had, or experienced the same thing are doubting Thomas', but so be it actual test results always wins the day. Regards Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

I have the worlds slowest 264 win, a 24" model 70. I throated it to seat my favorite 120 nosler SB at the length of the magazine. The best load I found was with IMR 7828 for the blistering speed of 3250 fps. My 6.5 gibbs and it's smooth Lilja barrel runs away from it with the same bullet and less powder. But the darn 264 is such a lucky rifle for me it will never go away, the animals keep falling down to it.

Interesting you choose a 120 grain bullet. I built a 6.5-06 and the 120 is also the bullet I want to shoot. Most 6.5 guys always go for the long send the bullet out a million yards kinda thing, I don't. I have hit 3232fps, with an extreme spread of 30 with 54 grains of IMR4350, in this Pac Nor barreled rifle. I am not gonna shoot IMR4350, as IMR7828 gives me better groups. Velocities are right around 3050fps, but the groups are .5 or so, besides in your case who needs more than 3200 fps, lights out on critters. This thread was started because I found the velocities with this particular 30-06 rifle extraordinary, not because the guys in my group are velocity nuts. FWIW! Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

Jerry, I have used 140's a couple times, mostly in a Swede sporter, because they shot better then the 120's. I have used the 120 solidbase for years on Caribou, deer and antelope. Mostly get exit holes, so what would a 140 gain me. Trajectory is flat with the 120's from 260 rem through 264 mag, in any range I will shoot game at. It's hard to fix whats not broken!

An update on The Kimber Mountain Assent Rifle in 30-06. My nephew Steve, who owns this rifle, just made a terrific kill on a nice 5X6 Bull Elk with this rig. Shooting the Hornady bullet, he killed this elk @ 408yds, with one shot. And the elk? Dead right there! Excellent performance from this fast barrel 30-06. NRA Benefactor Life Member
