That's good news, Mehul. I've owned a lot of Mausers of various breeds and calibers. ALL were good guns. What caliber did you get?

A few years ago there was a test in one of the gun rags for a russian built .308. If I remember right it was more of a sniper rifle than a hunting rifle and it might have been left overs from older days with the military. ANYHOW this gun was shooting good groups beyond anyones belief. I believe it was below moa all the way to 500 yds. It had a russion scope on it and I think they were to be priced about $500-600. They were supposed to be imported to the US through someone in Florida. I actually had my friend at the gun shop check into them but he could never get an answer or return phone call from the distributor so it all died a natural death.

I have handled this rifle various times at different IWAs, have worked the action, examined workmanship... crudely made, and lower quality than most milsurps, but serviceable.

Not worth its money, IMHO.

Pecos,

Mine is an 8x57 JS. I bought it from Mike Box who comes here occasionally though I saw it on Auctionarms and bid for it before I really knew who was selling it. The action is a wartime DuV 42 but the rifle has a new 23 1/2 inch barrel with two folding leaf sights and a straight stock. I have shot Remington, Federal and Turkish military surplus (for fun since it can't be used for hunting anyway) ammunition and it seems to like the Mil surp the best. A friend here in Appleton has offered to get some Sellier and Bellot from Cabelas which we plan to split and use as it comes in huge 400 round boxes and I shall be trying it next week after I return from a short trip to Canada. It is beautifully smooth and has zero recoil which suits me perectly.

I got my DNR number here and have been fishing a bit with friends but need to complete my hunter safety course very soon. Wish me luck in completing it so that I can go hunting.

Good hunting!

I, like kraky, read an article a few years back. What I recall is that the rifle was considered a bit rough, but shot well enough. I would consider other choices first, though.

Just saw these Russian bolt rifles in 308 with scopes for $ 495. Wonder how good they are?

Thanks for the opinions and advice in advance.

Good hunting!

just by looking at the pics they look pretty rough. $495 isn't a very cheap rifle IMO

I would think that the price and quality could be beat by Savage.

You could get a Charles Daly Mauser and a better scope for that. At least then you'd know you have a decent action.

Well judging your location I don't know what options are out there for you, but here one can go to walmart and buy a savage with a premounted scope for $300 it also comes with the accutrigger. after deer season i have even seen them as low a 280$. If they still have a deal like this in 243 I might just have to pick one up after deer season

cummins cowboy,

The price is with the scope. I am not sure I can get another new combination for the price? I shall check Savage and Charles Daly and compare prices but I am on a tight budget and was just thinking aloud...

Thanks for all suggestions and good hunting!

eldeguello,

That's exactly what I thought. I lived in Russia briefly some years ago and I have some respect for their guns, crudely finished as they may be.

I also like their telescopes as I have been to the biggest plant in Lytkarino and seen their scopes. They were excellent if a little heavy but at the price they seem nice to me. Let's see if anyone who has used them has anything to suggest.

Good hunting!

Have NEVER seen one of these things, so can't give you an informed opinion. If it is like other Russian arms, it is tough as hell!
