I doesn't have the scope on it I want VX3 2.5-8X36, but it will do for now. Winchester M70 FWT .30-06 SS Classic, McMillan Hunters Edge blind mag stock, Talley LWT low mounts, Leupold VX-II 3-9X40. Now I'm just waiting on the matching .338-06 to be built and I'll be ready for anything!

Nice rifle! I like your idea too with the matching 338/06. When that ones done then you'll only need the rest of them to match 25/06, 6.5/06, 270, 280, 35 Whelen, you know the drill.

I think I'm done after the .338-06 these Winchester's get expensive quick. I picked up everything second hand except the Talley's and I could have bought a lot of new rifles cheaper. You need to swing by the house and pick this one up, take it out to your place and do all the load development for me. I sure don't have the time or the place to do it while I'm down here in Lubbock for work.

First off, congratulations on a nice looking rifle. Now to some fine points: I'm afraid that I don't understand how adding a 338-06 to a 30-06 makes one ready for anything. Since you've got an '06, you're already in the middle of basic power curves and velocity potentials. If you want more power, then you are probably looking at least at a 338WM or 375 Ruger. If you want more trajectory, then perhaps a 270 WSM. It's hard to know what to recommend when someone starts in the middle. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

My friends say the same to me because I want a .338-06. But I want it as my heavy bullet rifle. I don't really ever need anything bigger. Molon Labe New account for Jacobite

What did you end up with for a weight on that rig?

Just my opinion but if you want a rifle for heavier bullets, I probably wouldn't be a .338-06 if you already have a 30-06. Personally, I'd opt for a 9.3x62 or a 375 H&H or Ruger. The 9.3 shoots projectiles from a 286 to 300 grains well. The 375's shoots even heavier bullets a bit faster. Start young, hunt hard, and enjoy God's bounty.

Just my opinion but if that was me, and I wanted to simplify things, I'd get a .338-06 and forget about the .30-06. The .338-06 will handle anything a .30-06 will with lighter bullets and still be able to go to 225 grain or 250. Not trying to sway you, just thinking out loud. The older I get, the more I lean towards simplification.

A little back story here, I had never intended to put this rifle together only the .338-06. I was looking for a SS action to go with another McMillan Hunters Edge that I already owned to build my .338-06 on. After an auction and some horse trading I wound up with two M70 Classics to use for donors in SS, one was a FWT barreled action and the other was a complete sporter rifle in a synthetic stock. The day after I picked both M70's from my FFL, I found this Edge stock used over on 24hr Campfire for $375 so I put the FWT in it since that was what it was inletted for. Ready for anything means, anything I want to hunt in any condition mother nature throws at me. What in North America couldn't you take with either a .30-06 or the .338-06? I'm not headed to Africa anytime soon and if I was all I could realistcly hunt for what I'm willing to spend would be plains game, so again what couldn't I take with this pair? I would have rather had the FWT in .270 Win however, this it the rifle I wound up with. Lastly I wasn't looking for recommendations on other cartridges, I was simply showing off my rifle. I knew exactly what I wanted when I started my .338-06 build, but how do you turn down an opportunity to build an excellent LWT .30-06? Besides when you get to the terminal end of things, how is any of the cartridges you mentioned going to make the animals I connect with anymore dead?

I'm guessing around 7.5 lbs as that is roughly what all the individual pieces add up to. I might be a little lighter since there isn't any bottom metal. My good scales for weighing it are packed up in a storage unit right now.

You should hand it over and I'll play with it awhile. Although I do need some IMR-4350 I'm running low and everyplace I look is out, so I better get some before I start messing with your rifle. I'm, guessing about 56 grains of 4350 and a 180 grain bullet will be pretty close.

I have around 4lbs of it in storage. We took the house off the market and now the wife wants to move everthing back home. I'll see if I can't dig it out next time I'm back up there. I'll give it to you to play with along with the rifle.

Well, for the level of the 338-06 one can get an inexpensive Ruger Compact Magnum in 338, if you hurry. But the easy solution is to get a 338 WinMag and load it any way you like, or it likes. If you already have a .473" boltface, then a 35Whelen or 9.3 would give you even heavier bullets. For Taylor
It sounds like you already have a .473" boltface, so build what you like. They'll all take plains game. The 9.3 will be legal for buffalo in some countries, though I'd recommend something along a 416Ruger or more for that adventure. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

You might have to ask my daughter about painting it. When she asked what it was I told her my new elk rifle. She picked it up and shouldered it then proclaimed matter of factly, you mean my new elk rifle.

7 1/2 lbs with a scope seems like a pretty decent weight. I like it. Plenty of low recoil 30-06 loads out there, you could do a lot worse than arguin ownership of a rifle with your daughter. An optimist would be out buyin an extra freezer..
