I think Barnes has an original in the 180 gr. weight. The only easy day is yesterday!

As Pegleg mentioned, Barnes made the 180 gr Original. I believe they used to make a 180 solid as well and soft points in 160 gr. Speer used to make a 170gr RN. -Lou

Wildcat bullets. Go to longrangehunting.com, they have heavy bullets meant for their big wildcat 270's. Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too! Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

Thanks guys, don't think I'll ever shoot 180 grain bullets out of my .270 Win. You just gave me some ammo for an argument about the .308 vs .270. I was told that any rifle that couldn't shoot an 180 grain bullet was worthless. I don't own a .308 but have shot enough to know that this is a good round but I don't like anyone who bad mouths my .270 and says that it is underpowered next to his .308. I've e-mailed Barnes asking about their 180 grain orgianls since they are not shown on their web page. I'd try 50 just to see how they shoot. I'm not going to by 200 of Hawk's just to try, though if some people wanted to do a group buy I might have to get some.

Yup, Barnes discontinued the 180 some time back. I have a box of Speer 170's that I'm going to get around to loading just for fun. Maybe a cow elk hunt or something. Speer manual #9 say's you can get them going around 2750+ with H4831 or 2650+ with IMR4350. Elk, it's what's for dinner..

The only problem with trying to use 180 grains in the standard 270 Winchester is relatively slow twist of the standard barrel. Richard Graves who makes the Wildcat bullets in Canada offer both 169.5 and 195 grains bullets in .277" dia, both work well, especially at long range but both seem to prefer twists in the order of 1:9 or even faster, the current crop of big wildcat .277's being capable of pushing both these bullets to 3200 or even faster. I tried the Barnes "Originals" in 180 grains in my old "standard" twist .270 barrel and they failed to stabilise, I am now using a 1:8 twist barel on this rifle and hope shortly to try some of the Wildcat 169.5 grains, the trade off however in a Winchester .270 case with long heavy bullets will be a loss of velocity over the more usual 130 and 150 grain bullet weights.
