Question:
I keep going back and forth on which one of these rifles would be best, maybe someone can clue me in on something I don't know.

Parameters: 30-06, stainless barrel, synthetic stock, carry/walking gun for Elk, desert mule deer, some stand hunting in Texas, no shots over 400 yards, want to shoot the 200 gr Accubond @ 2700 fps (twist may be important)

Sako Laminated Stainless - Barrel is 22 7/8", twist is 11", weight of gun is 7 3/4 pounds, detachable mag, cost about $1,400.00. Beautiful gun, known to be accurate, but is push feed

Steyr Pro Hunter - Barrel is 23.6", twist is unknown, weight is 7.7 pounds, detachable mag, cost about $1,000.00. Unusual looking, known to be accurate, tang safety

Kimber Montana - Barrel is 24", twist is unknown but should be 10", weight is 6 1/3 pounds, blind magagzine, cost about $1,200.00. Kevlar stock but very plain looking, controlled round feed, unknown accuracy

Choices:
Sako Laminated Stainless "Greywolf"
Steyr SBS Pro Hunter Camo Stainless
Kimber Montana 8400 Long Action

Woods,

The Steyr M85 will be released in two weeks at the SHOT Show. It modifies the M75 to CRF, and upgrades the synthetic stock (don't know about the laminated stock).

I shoot two Steyr rifles, and both are accurate.

I suggest waiting until after the 2006 new product announcement are made.

I expect all will give you hunting accuracy.

I do believe you mean Sako, not Steyr?

Your bias towards stalking plus your need to rarely, if ever, shoot past 400 yards tells me the Kimber is the best fit.

Sako needs to trim 1/2 to 3/4 lbs off all its Model 75s.

While I voted for the Kimber the rifle has not been made yet!

If you want a lightweight the 84M Montana in 308 appeals to me more than the 8400. If you must have the 200 gr bullet zipping along, for what I don't know, then they already make the 8400 Montana in 300 WSM and with handloads it will do whatever you want it to do.

I read an article on the Sako 85 and it sounds like a very nice rifle. It also is a CRF. Might be wise to wait and see what they are like. I know they will be making the Greywolf, wood and blue, and a snthetic version.

If you go to guns america website they have the kimber 8400 3006 for sale there. Can't speak for all of them but my 84m .308 is pretty accurate. Classic wood stock on it is pretty nice.

T/C, I don't think that most peoples definition of "Full Custom" happens for $1400.............DJ
