x-man3 inch groups in custom 270Wby?? Help
Custom Remington (action tuned), McMillan, #3 Douglas at 26 inches, reamed by JGS.
The damn thing has done a best of 2.5 inches and averages 3 sometimes much worse.
Bullets tried; 130 nosler part. and B tip, 130 Sierra, 130 Barnes X (yuck!! 6" groups), 130 Speer.
Powders tried H and Imr 4831, RL-19&22, IMR 7828.
230 rounds fired to date.
Do we have a bad barrel?
Any suggestions?
Help please!

sakofanX-man, whats the rate of twist in that barrel??
Secondly, I always use SMK's to determine a rifle's accuracy.
I know you are a big fan of the X bullets. So am I. Some rifle's wont have them X bullets. And no rifle ever shot the Nosler BT's for me under 3".
I assume this is a new barrel??..sakofan.. Hang in there, friend!!

John RicksTwist: I had a 270 Wea, shot horrible, had a 14 inch twist barrel. Put on a 10 and it behaved properly.
Any touching by the stock on the barrel is death to a group. Gotta have a good free float.
I agree with Sakofan, try some Matchkings. Another bullet to try, usually gives good accuracy, is a Ballistic tip. However, Matchkings can be deceiving at 100 yards, they have not completely stabilized. If the twist is wrong, or a bad crown, or bad chamber, they will not shoot good at 100 yards.
I have seen the same problem caused by an improperly trued action: The top bolt lug was 0.003" off the seat. I remachined the lugs and the rifle shot 3/8" groups, previously was shooting 2 to 3 inch groups. This rifle had been assembled by a gent that had all the tools but used them incorrectly, he was the one responsible for machining the bolt lugs incorrectly.
If the crown is improperly machined, it could also be the problem. Chances are you have several errors in the rifle construction that are accumulative. Chamber could be incorrect, maybe it is not concentric to the bore.
There is more to assembling a rifle than merely maching metal, all things have to be done accurately and properly.

<JOHAN>John Ricks
It sounds like you already has taken the mission to fix this rifle
The only thin I can think of is the twist or bedding, unless the barrel is completly worn out or heavily fouled with jacket material
270 wby is a very potent round for the mountains or plains.

MADISONThe firearms manufacturers connsider a 1 inch group to be all you need. Check your reloading manual[S] to verify these loads.
130 gr 57.0 gr H-4831
150 gr 57.0 gr H-4831
I know these loads are hot but, were accurate, back in the 70's. Check and start low...work up.

c&chow much freebore is in the chamber, had one that duoglas chambered and it had way to much freebore, wouldnt shoot a pattern much less a group.

TrademarkTexanI've had a couple of 3-4" Weatherbys. I contributed both to the 1"+ of freebore. I started shooting longer (heavier) bullets and seating as far out as I could. That really helped.
