Just thought I would post some pictures of my new long range hunting rig and also a group I put in yesterday at the range. Rifle is a M70 in .270 WSM Re-barrelled with a Border barrel work done by Mike Norris (quality of work is second to none). Fully bedded action Leupold bases with Burris signature rings (kindly donated by a good friend of mine) Scope is a Nightforce 3.5 - 15 x 50 Moderator is a jet Z Pictures of load are AA3100 65 grns and chrono'd at 3243 fps using a 130 grn Hornady Interbond. I am looking forward to using this get up at long range on Fallow or Roe. I am over the moon with the work Mike Norris has done and before this group I managed to shoot, i put in 2 honest quarter inchers but was amazed when the 3 round went where it went. As long as it is an honest sub half inch performer I will be more than happy. Hope you enjoy the pics. http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z222/jbirchall/138.jpg http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z222/jbirchall/WinM70006.jpg http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z222/jbirchall/WinM70007.jpg http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z222/jbirchall/WinM70005.jpg http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z222/jbirchall/WinM70004.jpg http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z222/jbirchall/WinM70003.jpg

I've always been curious about how much sound attenuation you get with those smaller sized moderators. jjmp Thanks and yes the cut rifle barrels seem to work. I am also delighted with the scope - it is an excellent tool when you have to dial in a moa adjustment. Paid to kill I suppose it depends on what you class as long range. I am intending to shoot out to 600 yards max really as when practising at long range I have been amazed at the wind drift at extended ranges and don't feel I have the skill yet to shoot past this distance. I have my drop chart done for this kind of ditance. Fjold I have had the T8 moderators (over barrel design) for some years now but before I bought the Jet Z I carried out my due diligence exercise by consulting with people who used both and the Jet Z seemed to have the edge. I now have both and I can say in my opinion the Jet Z is slightly superior in every way. There is hardly any recoil with this rifle - you can certainly see the bullet strike etc.Moderators are very popular in the UK for obvious reasons and the Jet Z is up there in terms of noise and recoil reduction. Thanks

3243 fps? Not much faster than a .270 Win, nice group though, saw one alot smaller at Walmart, it was the test group fired by a Howa 1500 in .270 win, it was a .007" 3 shot group

Very nice rig with a very impressive group. Some questions please. Is a moderator the same thing as a suppressor? Was you target shot with or without the moderator? Will the moderator change poi? “I am an American; free born and free bred, where I acknowledge no man as my superior, except for his own worth, or as my inferior, except for his own demerit.” Theodore Roosevelt (1858 – 1919)

All Thanks for the comments Dick Yes suppressor, moderator or silencer and yes the group was shot with the mod on and yes the POI will change with the mod off. I actually haven't shot it with the mod off as yet. Hope that answers your questions Thanks

If you were to load to 1050f/s with 175 gr anythings, would it go click/thump?

Ole, yes it would go: click ,thump, is the answer to your question. Jon2, isnt it good to know that there is always some other gun or some elses gun that shoots better than yours! There was me thinking it was not possible to improve on a one hole group!! How wrong can you be!! Look on the brightside Jon, theres room for improvement... regards griff

Jon2 and Griff, That is one very nice looking rifle, and the targets indicate the man who assembled it knew what he was doing! Generally, things are going well in the colonies; but perhaps one ship got diverted enroute to Australia and this is the descendant. That rifle should be used in Benchrest...the record for 5-shots is .009" and it has stood nearly thirty years IIRC. Maybe, the bullet holes were only .007" out of round...the 270 has had issues with bullet tipping on this side of the atlantic... regards, Rich DRSS

Jon2 What a well thought out and built rig! The way you and it are shooting should make reaching out and touching at long-range a lot of fun. I confess my ignorance, however, over the suppressor. Does it serve an accuracy function as well as sound reduction? At the velocity of your preferred load what sort of sound reduction do you realize? Congratulations again on a super performer. Have fun! Matt

hnts4fun Thanks for the comments. I have been hunting the last 3 days so haven't been on line. Actually with the pictured rifle I shot a Roe Buck at 503 yards (my longest to date) so all is great. I am going again this weekend. This long ranging is addictive. I do not know this from personal experience but it seems to be a generally accepted statement that mods do enhance accuracy slightly. It is still loud with the mod on but nothing like it is without one. I am not sure of the measurement of noise in decibels but the mods but it below the level which would permantly damage your hearing. It is this fact which made them legal in the UK. Hope that answers your questions. Many thanks

Jon2 Congrats on your long range buck! No matter how well the rifle is built, shots like that don't happen unless the shooter does his part. Thanks for the explanation on the suppressor...I found the application interesting. Continued success with your long ranging!! Matt

Jon - fantastic looking and performing outfit. What is the stock and how long is the barrel? A small point - moderators make a great difference to the non hearing protection stalker BUT the noise levels produced will still damage hearing in the long term if used without ear protection. Unless the ASE is unbelievably effective you must end up with noise akin to an unsilenced 22rf? That is a level that needs to be protected against long term.

Adam When I re-read my post I realised I had missed off some crucial info. Barrel length is 24 inches and the stock is a Bell & Carlson with the alu bedding block. Quite right about the noise level and I think that is a spot on analogy re: the .22 rimfire. Interesting to hear that the user may suffer damage if exposed for prolonged periods. I have often wondered about this fact as the noise level is still noticable. PS I have resurrected my 7mm Rem Mag so will let you know how I get on. Still have the brass here waiting. Good excuse for Griff and I to meet up with yourself. Best Jon

Jon, Nice rifle! For all you who don't believe a .007 group can be done, it can. I shot a .007 5 shot group once but the flash from the barrel burned the target so I don't have any proof. Darned muzzle flash I was going to do another group but the vice I used scratched the finish on my gun, so I decided not to. I didn't really want to reload new cartridges with faster burning powder anyway and I figured that was the only way I was going to get rid of the powder burns on my target. Anyone know of a flash suppressor that looks good on a high end british style custom gun. Maybe one that looks good with bank note engraving??
