I found a 50's or 60's era 03 Springfield in 35 Whelen. Asking price is $450.00 The rifle is very well done. Metal finish is 98% plus. Wood has a few hunting/handling dings. It has a monte carlo stock and a Weaver K3 scope in weaver rings. The owner of the shop had little information about the owner or builder of the rifle. What is a good price for this rifle? Thanks, Jeff The true measure of a hunters skill is not the size of the trophy but rather the length of the shot with the greater measure of skill being the shorter shot---Jeff Cooper

I'd say if it is your run of the mill customized springfield in a bishop or fajen stock the price is about right. Unless it has some big name custom house stamped on it, I see them fairly often at that price. The fact that it's a whelen I believe makes it a $450 gun instead of a $350 gun. If you are looking for a whelen on a springfield action I'd jump on it as you don't see many for sale. The scope is worth about 50 bucks if it's in good shape. Of course I'm going by your description. The details could easily move it several hundred bucks up, but unless it has some glaring screw up I don't think it would be worth much less than $450. The other thing is to make sure the 03 action falls in the higher serial # range that are considered safe to shoot with modern loads. Good Shooting, Weagle

can you get us a bit more info on it? I would say it is definitely worth it (if in the right serial range). I bought one for that price a few years back, gorgeous polished out military barrel, leupold scope, got the shop to take it to 308 Norma for the 450 total too. But as mentioned, they are disappearing, lots of yahoo's are taking them back to "original" which is silly. if you have the money and it has no problems I would buy it. In fact, now I have to try to take my mind off it to not get upset over not having the money to get it myself. Red

I have a 1903 Mk I Springfield in 35 Whelen, and to me it is "priceless" because it was my weapon of choice for over 20 years. If I was buying a "new" Whelen of the rack in a 1903 Springfield it would really depend on the quality of the stock and the quality of the barrel. However, if I bought the weapon the 1st thing I would change would be the Weaver scope. What type of scope mounts does it have?

If your buying it then it is worthy exactly what YOU feel it is worth. No more and no less. One way to look at it is that it would cost considerably more if you were to have it built yourself, even with a low end bbl.

I'd say a good price would be $400, $450 is a fair price. Considering there really aren't any modern production 35 whelens out there, and a custom rifle, even an older one, is better then current production guns, you might want to get it. It would cost at least twice that much to build a custom 35 whelen, new or old action. And a modern custom wouldn't be a piece of history that the rifle you're looking at is. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

As Dago Red said, if it is NOT a low-number action, it is worth what they're asking in the condition you describe. I would buy it! "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

BTW it can also be converted to .358 Norma.!! Also, I assure you that someone has a lot more than $450 in that rifle. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Sterling Davenp0rt had a beautiful .35 Whelen Springfield in his booth at Dallas Safari Club convention. He had used an old Griffin & Howe Stock and a duplicator to make the new stock and equipped the rifle with a vintage receiver sight. The stock was the right pitch for the peep sight. Great wood and workmanship and a classic piece. The price.....$3,000. Makes yours sound like a steal if it's properly done. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

I hate 50s stock styling and would not pay quite that much. With a decent classic stock, probably. The steel tube Weaver K-3 is about the perfect scope for that rifle, but even if the seals are still good, they cannot be expected to hold up much more. I'd sure have paid what the gun store paid for it, but after their markup, I'd let it sit. My guess is that they got it for $300 to $350. It is a good citizen's duty to love the country and hate the gubmint.

One can take a $600 Springfield, have $400 of work done, add a $150 sight, and then the rifle is worth $150. Go through the pawn shops offering 50%. Go through the gun shows offering 50%.
