I recently picked up a few boxes of the new federal premium 150gr trophy copper. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these? Seem like kind of s federal version of the barnes ttsx

Well, not quite the same thing but I used a 7mm Rem Mag 150 Gr. Nosler E-Tips at 3000 fps in Africa. Kudu, Zebra, Beasts, Eland - they were all shot with the 150 E-Tip.

I have no doubt you'd be find with the Trophy Coppers.

Robert

A monometal bullet will certainly kill an elk. Eventually. Even a military FMJ will kill an elk. Eventually. The monometals probably don't pencil through as often as they do with lighter game like whitetails, but sometimes they just refuse to expand at all.

As Stonecreek said, if the copper bullet opens up you will be fine.

I may just stick to the eldx factory ammo for now then. Worked great on my caribou other than some lost meat and copper shrapnel left behind. Still had full penetration at 160 yards though. So it held up enough for that high of an impact velocity

I have not used any monometal bullets on anything. I have used 160 grain Nosler Partitions and Bitteroot bonded core bullets on elk. They both kill quickly given decent shot placement.

I used 160 grain accubond at around 3000 fps. Worked just like you think it should which is to say perfectly. Im sure the Barnes or the Fed version is the same.

The 160gr is the bullet for the 7mm Mag. Take your choice...TSX, Accubond, Scirocco, Partition.

I would add the 160gr Sierra Game King here too. Those who have hunted Wapiti (Elk) here in NZ say they are less tenacious of life than our common red deer, some of our early hunters using the old SMLE 303 to kill big Wapiti bulls called them 'soft'.

The Sierra 160gr at 3000fps in my 7x61 S&H made short work of a lot of red deer.

After killing several elk and many more deer with the TTSX bullet, I've not yet discovered one that didn't open up as pictured on the advertisements,

All have been one-shot kills.....it's now my "go-to" bullet.

Same here. I've been using the Barnes X, TSX and TTSX almost exclusively for well over 20 years.

Kills ... eventually? What the hell does that mean?

I've had very few animals that weren't DRT using monometals and that ranges from the smallest up to and including Cape Buffalo and Brown Bear.

Todd, I agree. I am told by several seasoned hunters that the TTSX bullets are very reliable and kill very well.

I few years ago we had a hell of a problem with GS Custom bullets not opening up reliably on plains game with 7 mm and 30 cal. That's GS Custom not Barnes.

When a monolithic bullet works is works fantastic, when it fails it fails miserably, therefore I don't normally use them. I have about 3 experiences wherein they failed our of quite a number of kills, but Im just not all that forgiving and prefer the partition or bonded core bullets..but everyone has to make that decision on their own...

The only experience that I have with them is yesterday at the range. They they grouped very well in a M70 7mm Rem.
I have only used the Barnes TSX in 338, 375, and 416. I am a monolithic user. I have no idea of who manufacturers this bullet, other than the Internet theories of it being a grooved E-Tip. I would use it in any situation that I would use a Barnes TTSX. That would pretty well be all, since I am not a long range shooter.

I agree!

I've used the Barnes for decades now. Randy Brooks is a personal friend of mine so initially I felt obligated to use them as soon as he designed the original X when he was in American Fork, Utah.

After the first few kills, I've used them because I wanted to. No lead in the meat, dead critter every single time (and I mean a frickin' ton of them).

While I use other bullets for various tasks, I use the TTSX in about every cartridge that I use on deer/elk/bear etc.

Perhaps some mono-metals don't/didn't work but that's not been my experience at all. Period.

Same to the positive. Never had a TSX fail and they are very accurate in standard cases, Weatherbys, Ultra mags etc. I load them for several folks and after many elk and scores of deer and pigs have not had anything but impressive wound channels.

I too have had nothing but positive results from X, TSX, TTSX. If I am ever in doubt of muscle mass being enough to open them up, I take out bone. One can take an animal at a very hard angle too. The 150 in the 7mmRM will work swell.

The only TSX bullet I've used is the 570g TSX in my 500 Jeffery at 2300 fps. Only shot feral hogs and elk with them so far. They've opened up fine and penetrate like hell. Have to make sure there's not another animal behind the one you are shooting. That being said, if Barnes would cut 20 grains off of the nose (making the hollow point a little wider in diameter) I would load them to 2500 fps. Think that would be about perfect.

As for the 7mm, lots of folks swear by 175g Sierra Game Kings at 3000 fps

Chuck

I like the monometal bullets on Cape Buffalo, Hippo and large animals..ONe PG and deer and elk Ive become an avid Accubond fan, and still like the partition..I do use the Barnes ttsxP in my 8x57 and 8x60 were a bit of velocity makes me feel better, and they do work..I had some failure very early on with Barnes bullets, 3 to be exact, and when I complained Connie pissed me off, so didn't use them for years..Didn;t need her BS..

I've been using Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets since 2005 in my .375 RUM and .300 Weatherby. This includes 5 hunts in Africa (including one shot kills on Buffalo and Leopard), and hunts in New Zealand, Azerbaijan, Texas, and Montana. I am 100% satisfied with the results of those Barnes bullets on at least 35 animals.

I have worked up a load for my 7mm Rem mag with 160 grain TSX bullets that is producing less than 2 1/2" groups at 430 yards. I will be using this load next month for a Caribou and Moose hunt in Newfoundland.
