just talked to the guy and it's a model 1200 in 7mm mag.it sure looks cool but so do my FALs and i can only get 3" groups with the best one. thats o.k. for a battle rifle but not for a hunting rifle in my opinion. this one is used . is there any thing i should look out for or check before buying?

I've got a 1200 in 270 win. The actions are Mauser pattern and were made in the Santa Barbara Arsenal in Spain for Parker Hale of England. The Barrels were made by Parker Hale in England on what was brand new machinery (Cold Hammer forged rifling). Mine shoots realy well from 90grains to 150grains.
I have a 1200 in 30-06. It's a light little girl for its normal size and functions fine. I have never really tested it for accuracy but burned off a lot of rounds busting clay targets at 100 yards with great ease.

My Parker Hale is the model 1200 and it is a .30-06. It has the Monte Carlo type stock which I liked at the time
When I purchased it second hand, it was very inaccurate but this was probably more due to the "Parker Hale" scope mounts and the cheap scope that was on it. There was also a fine crack in the stock behind the tang. I had it glass bedded and the barrel free floated and now it is VERY accurate with Hilver steel one piece mounts and a Weaver 4x scope. It will shoot one hole 3 shot groups very easily using 180 gr Nosler Partitions and under 1 inch for most bullets. Most also hit to a similar point of aim.
I believe it has a Spanish Santa Barbara M98 action which I think was also in the model 1100s as well as the 1200s. Some may have Mark X actions.
The cheaper model 1000s did not use a M98 action.
Parker Hale not long ago still made a big game rifle in .375 H&H, 404 Jeffrey and .458 Win Mag. My lasting regret is not to buy a 404 Parker Hale when I had an opportunity to do so.
I like my model 1200 but will get it re-stocked one day.

Nitro x, the one that i am looking at also has a monte carlo type stock and it looks cool. what is it that you don't like about it? does it kick you in the face or something like that? i have never had a rifle with that type of stock.

The only thing "wrong" with the Monte Carlo stock is its highly reflective finish. The shine with the sun at the right angle is incredible and will scare away game very easily. This can be fixed by rubbing down the stock to remove the fine varnish.
Other than that for me it is just a matter of taste. I liked it back then, now I like the classic stock design - no rollover comb, rounded forend, ebony contasting forend etc. If I get it restocked I will keep the Monte Carlo stock for posterity.
I don't find a calibre such as a .30-06 a problem with that sort of stock for recoil. Mine has a gold trigger and the trigger mechanism is fine. The barrel is light and whippy but as said accuracy is not an issue.
The rifle sounds like a Parker Hale Santa Barbara M98 1200 Deluxe. If you like the stock style, and rifle is in good condition, go for it.

My Ph is a Safari in 308 Norma mag, with the Weatherby wannabe stock. I don't care for the looks of the stock, but I don't find the design in view of recoil objectionable, which I do with some Monte Carlo stocks (Winchester and Sako for example). Try it and see, I guess. Parker Hale made good rifles. - Dan
