I have never had any trouble getting 3000 FPS with a 150 gr. bullet in the Win. pre 64 fwt 270s with 22 inch barrel...I have some of that old 4831 powder, but RL -22 will get you there but your operating at max.. I see no problem useing max loads as long as you know where max is in your particular rifle. Accuracy is in many cases at its best at max, contrary to some of the BS about max loads you may hear..Many rifles will handle loads over book max as most reloading manuals cut themselves some leeway to stimie frivoulous law suits. Its up to you as the handloader to know what you are doing, and how to do it otherwise shoot your loads at 2 grs below max until you become more efficient at the bench. My normal load with my .270s was always 2900 or a tad more...but any of those guns would handle 3000 all day long..I just always find my rifles max then cut back a gr. for good measure if it will shoot the same and it always does...The deer and elk don't mind at all. Brad how would you know that? I've been reloading for over 35 years and I know the signs of high pressure. I have no signs of hard extraction, cratered primers and I used to routinely measure my cases after firing when doing load development with a caliper. I get 10 reloads per case and could get more but recycle them after that. Ray's probably been reloading longer than I have. Some of the older reloading manuals before the powder manufactures got litigation sensitive routinely showed velocities over 3000 fps with 150g bullets. chuck375, I haven't been loading but about a decade, but I do have some manuals from the 70s and 80s and I am often quite surprised how anemic the loads in the newer manuals are, even when using the exact same components. Some say its because they ave better equipment for measuring pressure now, but I call BS on that. Especially when you consider how much better the steels guns are made out of these days than they were when Jack O'Conor was loading bullets.

I only use 24" barrels in my .270s. I prefer a longer barrel on a bolt rifle. Can't stand shorter lengths, ain't worth a shit for holding a steady sight. If you've got a long throat you can achieve much higher velocities w/out any pressure signs at all. Ya just gotta get lucky with a cartridge/bullet/COAL combo that'll take the jump. There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.
