300 Rum is way to much for deer 7mm would be alot better if you want your deer to be in 2 pieces after you've shot then go ahead and snag that 300 Rum. I just bought a 300 winny and its to much for deer in general just MHO. Save meat go with the 243 or 270 if its just for deer.

Save the monster cartridges for the monster animals. If you want a flat shooting cartridge get a 7mm Rum.

The 7mmrsum is just slightly slower than the 7mmwsm and it is selling so slow that it probably won't last long.If you buy one buy plenty of brass because it will probably be discontinued in the near future.I have two 7mmstw's and a 7mmultramag.To be honest the 7mmultramag is a waste of the ultramag case.It burns a lot more powder and only produces 50fps to 75fps more velocity than the 7mmstw.If you are prepared to spend a great deal of time(and hundreds of rounds of ammo per year) practising in order to develop and maintain the skills to consistantly place your bullets at distances in excess of 400 yards the 7mmstw is a fine choice. If however you intend to only shoot a few boxes of ammo per year the 7mmremmag would be as good a choice as any.

if you get a killer deal on the remmy and that is the "rifle" you want then buy it. there is no measurable difference between the shortys.
if, 10 years down the road all the brass has fallen off the earth then rechamber to wsm for $50 or so.
if you have to have a short mag either will be more than enough. your choice now is what you want your rifle to look like.....
by the way, the original 7 mag is hard to beat [Big Grin]

How is the 7mmWSM selling? I am considering adding one to my gun safe.

I can only speak for my area but the 300wsm is selling quite well. The 7mmwsm and 270wsm are selling but not nearly as well.Remingtons rsum sales are stagnant with very few selling at all.

I, too, have thought about the 7mm Remington Short Ultra Mag. I got my stainless short action M1999 with the magnum bolt face a couple of weeks ago. I need another 7mm like I need another hole in the head, but like I keep telling my wife, "What's need got to do with it?"

My logic behind looking more seriously at the Remington than the WSM is fairly simple for me. For the 6gr or so capacity difference in the two cases, the Remington is only a few fps behind the WSM. I like that efficiency, epecially since the case itself is a better design with a longer neck and 30 degree shoulder (I know that must sound strange, coming from someone who can't seem to get enough powder crammed into his Ackley cartridges). The down side, of course, is whether or not the 7mm SAUM will survive. It's not even that big of an issue for me. I have no qualms about buying enough brass to get me by.

With a 7-08, a 7-08AI, 7mm SAUM, and a 7mm Rem Mag, I'll pretty much have the 7's covered. I have no use for an UltraMag in 7mm. If I need more horsepower than that, I'll just grab my .300 Win Mag.

I consider the .300 Win Mag one of those "tweeners". You know, more than what's really needed for deer, but a little less than what I'd really prefer for elk. The next action I pick up will be an M1999 long action with a magnum bolt face. I'm thinking about building an 8mm based on the RUM case shortened to 2.5-2.7". It just sounds more interesting than merely reaching for the .338 Win Mag. It won't kill an elk any deader than the .300 or .338 Win Mags, but a true gun nut doesn't have to rely on that much logic.

Bottom line. If you like the 7mm SAUM and can get a good price on the rifle, go for it and never look back.
