Quick question:

Is a Model 70 Classic Sporter .300 Wby. built on the standard long Model 70 action........or is it on the express length action, same as the 7-STW and .375 H&H??

Well, the .300 Wby is based on the full length H&H case, so it's pretty safe to say they share the same action.

I've seen them from the factory both ways, with the express action (.330" hole spacing) and standard magnum (.860") hole spacing.

Mag boxes and followers have also varied.

The ones built on Express actions have uniformly fed and ejected better than those built on standard magnum actions.

It is worth it to double check before you buy.

I know you can make a regular magnum action work for the 30o WBY. Gary Stiles said he can turn my 300 win mag M70 into a 375 HH (future project) So I am sure a 300 wby would also work.

Looking at getting an elk gun Don ?? clap i LOVE my 300 wby.

Actually, Bill, I've got a whole stable chucked full of potential elk medicine already. The Model 70 transaction went down this A.M. and it's currently resting comfortably in the safe. thumb

It's awaiting a future makeover into something completely bigger and badder. BOOM

All pre 64 Win are the same length, only the box is different with the addition of a bolt stop...Most of the post 64 were the same length up until about 5 years or so ago..not sure when the changes took place on some rifles. Any pre 64 Win will take a 300 Wby, they came in 300 H&H and 375 H&H....

The Classic M-70 long actions are all the same length. For the 300 Wea, 375 H&H, Ultra's, 416 Rem Mag etc. the rear bridge is shortened and the hole spacing changed to .330..............................DJ

dj,

In theory all H&H length chamberings come from the factory with the express action (.330" rear hole spacing), but in practice I have seen multiple rifles that have come from the factory with standard magnum action longer rear bridge and .860" hole spacing).

I had a factory 300 WBY last week that had the longer rear bride, and about a month ago I had a factory 7mm STW with the longer rear bridge. Three years ago I sold a factory 300 WBY mag with the longer rear bridge (.330 rear spacing).

Point is that while MOST may come with the express action, it is best to check when purchasing one because SOME came with the standard magnum action (for reasons that totally escape me).

I fully understand that all Post-64 long action initially share the same length, but the express action does allow for easier ejection, particularly of loaded shells, when chambering for H&H length actions. They also have different mag boxes and bolt stops.

Yea, I have no doubt that there are a few odd ducks out there and that you've seen them. I just think that some people here might not have realized that in Classic M-70's a 30-06, 300 Win Mag and 416 Rem Mag all have the same length action.
I wonder if some of the odd ones like your 300 Weatherby with a std receiver bridge might have had to do with a factory that knew it was closing and getting out rifles by sticking what parts it had at hand together? Maybe not but it's an idea.

Have you seen a new M-70 yet? I'm wondering if the quality is going to be stepped up over the last of the older ones...........................DJ

Very well could be that some were made when they knew the factory was closing, but in the case of the 7 STW, they quit chambering that round in the Classic long before there was wind of the closing. The latest WBY was several years old was well.

Who knows, maybe a guy on the line got lazy.

I've not yet seen a new Model 70, except at the SCI Convention. Based on what I saw there, I'd prefer an earlier Classic or better yet a good Pre-64. I did not like the looks of the metal finish, nor the stock. Some of the individual parts looked like a definite step up though (like the Williams extractor and the bolt shroud/safety).
