Lothar Walther 9.3x62 Barrel... Any good?

The wife and I were cleaning out one of the spare bedrooms and I found a cool surprise, a Lothar Walther 9.3x62 pre-threaded barrel(threaded for a mauser). I bought it 7 years ago, and completely forgot about it. If I remember right, it's actually chambered "long" and you set barrel back until it head spaces. Do any of you have any experiences with LW's pre-threaded barrels? How is the accuracy? I know I bought it because it was cheap. I figure if it will hold at least 5-6" group at 200yds(hopefully better than that though), it will kill what I need it to kill. Thanks guys!

LW barrels are very good barrels. I have a couple of them. Very smooth bore with minimal fouling and very accurate.

I'll buy it if you decide to sell...they are extremely accurate barrels, you can expect to get at least 2" groups at 200 yards with one. That is the only barrels that I use these days and has been for a number of years.

Good to hear. I've heard they were good barrels, but never had any exposure to their pre threaded/pre chambered ones. The machining on it is really top notch. I don't have a bore scope but the chamber and bore looks like a mirror. I'm going to keep it, I have an early Oberndorf that would make a perfect mate for it someday.

I have one on my 9.3x62 (same rifle I posted of photo of in your other thread). Accuracy is great and wouldn't hesitate to use another LW barrel.

I had a set of them for my Valmet 412S, 9,3X74R O/U. They were spooky accurate for that type of firearm.

I've been using them for years. Yes they are excellent barrels.

I have had three pre-chambered L/W barrels (.243, 7x57 and 9.3x62) and one special order L/W .257 barrel fitted to my Mausers.

All are extremely accurate and superbly finished. You can't go wrong.

Ok, I'm inspired... Anyone know a "cheap, fast, good" smith to get this barrel screwed on with maybe some sights? It'd be cool to have it by fall... Wishful thinking?

I should think in SW MO you'd have a couple decent gunsmiths. If you want it chambered and some sights put on, send it to Williams Gunsight Co. They do great work.

Unfortunately I haven't found a smith close to me that I'd trust even mounting a scope.

I buy these barrels all the time to put on orphan Mauser actions to sell. One problem I've had with this caliber is that if my gunsmith uses a headspace gauge to set up the headspace, I can get light primer hits. I've started using an unfired Hornady factory case from which I pulled the bullet and dumped the powder and primer. Then I cut the neck off so that the headspace is only on the shoulder. With Hornady ammo it never has light primer strikes. The 9.3X62 is the only caliber for which I've experience this problem.

Could it be that the 9.2 x 63 headspace guage that your gunsmith uses is the problem? Or perhaps the reamer that he uses?

I use factory Norma 9.3x62 ammunition to head space off of. Never had any issues.

I have used a dozen or so 9.3x62 rifles with several reamers and no problems so far..Maybe his gage is haywire!

LW has a patented polishing process that polishes a bore better than anyone else. they are awesome under a borescope.

I have had this problem here with my LW barrelled M70 in 9.3x62. Definitely not a barrel problem but a gunsmith using SAMMI based reamers. It fires U.S. made ammo (Winchester, Hornady etc) but sometimes misfires on Euro made ammo which seems to be shorter from rim to shoulder. I cured this by necking up to 416 and then sizing again with the 9.3 die creating a false shoulder to headspace from.

My LW barrel is accurate by the way.

Cheers,
Mark.

Both of my 404 Jeffery barrels from L-W shoot a whole lot better than I do!

I don't think you'll be disappointed about keeping it at all. All of the rest of us who would like to have it will be tho...

My 9.3 x 62 LW barrel arrived about 2 hours ago. (ordered in mid May) It'll be attached to my Oberndorf receiver this week-end. I am psyched!

why would anyone want to headspace off a piece of loaded ammunition, no matter what brand when there are headspace gauges available? obviously much more standardized and accurate? What am i missing??

Getting off topic but I didn't say it was headspaced off a piece of ammunition. What you are missing is that there is different specs to reamers depending on if they are U.S. or European, or so I am told.

Templar ; have you found a smith to put the L W barrel on your action yet?
I had a 9.3×62 Mauser and liked it but wanted more velocity. So I built a 9.3×64 Brenneke. After I sold the 62 I really wished I hadn't.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Yeah, I found someone, but he is way backed up right now. I'm going to put it on an Oberndorf. Till then, I'm concentrating on my 400 Whelen build. Should be fun!
