| I have a Sako M-75 and a HS Precision LA-2000 in 300 RUM. Winchester also made them for a while but I beleive has discontinued them. Most of the semi-custom makers chamber them i.e. Hill Country, Christiansen etc.........DJ |

| Is there a brand you prefer? Or do you plan on getting a custom gun or what? |

| I have my 300ultramags built on stainless 700 actions with match grade barrels. They feed very well and it is relatively easy to find an accurate load with them. |

| Mike, I would pick another. I have had a few of these. I like em. But I reload. I suggest a 300WSM or Win mag if you don't. Factory loading are fine and perform nicely. 180gr at 3250fps isn't nothing to sneeze at. Don't expect to get accurate results from reloading 180gr bullets to reach 3350fps or more. Its a rarity. And the people who say they get it, usually say it for every rifle they ever owned. |

| If you want a 300 RUM, then you should get one. What do you plan on hunting with it? |

| thanks guys, DOC i dont think i will ever hunt anything with, it unless i draw an elk tag for here in michigan. or ever get out west. i just wanted somthing with a big bang!to help fill the collection. and all i did was look at the ballistics for the 300's and it looled like the rum was the best of them all. albeit its not as common. but then i always did like stuff that was a little diffrent |

| This is only my personal opinion and nothing more. The 30-378Wby and 300RUM are excellent chambers, however, they fit a specific nitch. That nitch is long range trophy hunting of large to medium game (elk, moose, caribou, mule deer), where shots are expected at 400 yards minimum and 500-600 yards may become a strong possibility.
The use of these chambers separate the typical hunter from the long range trophy hunter. I'm not saying that this is gospel, however, when you burn this amount of powder, you should have a specialized purpose in mind. This would be extended ranges and energy.
If you want a wall hanger rifle and a conversation piece, that's certainly your right. Both of the above chambers, if shot constantly and without care would certainly offer reduced barrel life pretty quickly.
The 308 Win and 30-06 will kill large game very well and economically within 300 yards (probably 85% of all shots taken). The 300WSM, 300 Win Mag and 300Wby are all you will really need for 99.9 percent of hunting activity.
The use of the 30-378Wby and 300RUM make up the remaining 0.1 percent of on the fringe trophy hunters. |

| I must have gotten lucky with my factory BDL 300 RUM. Handloads for it using RL25, Fed 215M, and 180 SST's and 200 Accubonds tend to be most accurate right up toward MAX. The factory 180 Partition load does shoot about 1" to 1.25" at about 3250. I haven't been able to get the 180 Partition to shoot well using RL25 though. I should try IMR7828. I hear that is most similiar to the factory load. I won't use the SST for hunting so that leaves the 200 accubond at about 3170 fps. Very accurate. 3 holes almost touching @100. The SST load is up around 3375-3400 fps. SPLAT!!! I have some Retumbo to try out, so maybe that will offer some more options. It's tough to balance load development without shooting out your barrel by the time you are finished. Yes 1200 rounds is a lot. I'm trying to just try a few different things and be done before I get more than 400 down the pipe. Then use it for hunting with my favorite loads. |

| I get very similar velocities to Stubblejumper out of my 300RUM with 180 grain bullets. Mine is just a stock 700 LSS and my accuracy with both partitions and BT's is around an Inch at 100 Meters. Sometimes less, Sometimes More. With MatchKings they will start to cut at 100 meters.
3350 FPS is pretty easy to get to with 180 grain bullets and Re25 in a RUM. |

You don't say.Now who was it that was saying that you couldn't get good accuracy at that kind of velocity? |

| As much as I like all the Ultra Mags if I didn't reload I wouldn't touch one. Factory ammunition is very expensive and can be hard to find. Unless you either reload or are rich I doubt you will be able to afford to shoot your Ultra enough to get comfortable with it.
Almost forgot, there was a run of Model 70s in 300 Ultra. You can find some on Guns America last I looked. |

| I had a mod 70 classic in 300 RUM. I was shooting 200 speer spitzers at 3200 and 200 sierra BT's at 3170. They were both at an inch at 100 yards. |
