Why can't I find a gun safe that stores rifles horizontally with the muzzle slightly below the action? I'd prefer not to store them vertically so any oil, etc in the bore stays out of the action and so that constant sitting on the butt does not deform the recoil pad (which I've seen happen). Every safe I have seen is designed to store long guns vertically. Does anyone know of a company making a fire safe (or any kind of safe at this point) that stores long guns horizontally?

The main reason is that a horizontal safe takes up more floor space, so there is less demand for that configuration. Also, arraying the horizontal guns so that a maximum number can be stored in the available space makes access to the stored guns somewhat tricky. However, I agree that horizontally storing and displaying guns is preferable. Treadlock used to make a horizontal chest with a cushion on top so that it could double as a seat, but I don't think the idea ever caught on.

As to deforming butt pads, this is a real problem, espcially for some of those on classic guns that have a chemical composition that is not as resiliant as later materials (Sakos are especially prone to this). However, the idea that there is oil in the bore that can "drain" into the action is a long-standing urban (or maybe rural) legend. Even bores oiled for long-term storage shouldn't have enough volume in them to migrate, and no bore in a ready-to-shoot condition should have more than a remnant of lubricant in it.

Just put the rifles in the safe barrel down.

Take the little plastic spray can lids and put them in the bottom of the safe first. This prevents the oil from staining the carpeting.

Just an FYI I have seen a gun safe that might be what your looking for, but not sure who the Mfg. was It was disguised as a linen chest, you know the kind you see at the foot of a bed with a lift up (padded) cover. Inside it had a specially designed safe with a door that was also a "lift up" with a penumatic (SP) support that would hold the door open to allow access. As I remember it cost about 20% more than the same size "stand up model".

I think it might have been a Liberty or Lincoln, really don't remember, but it was within the last year (or so) that I saw it at a safe dealership.

Treadlock brand, one of the first manufacturers of gun safes, started out with horizontal(footlocker style) safes. They probably still make them if they are still around.

Treadlok used to make a horiz. chest type safe. I had one but it didn't have an interior. It was about the size of a love seat.

I think you'll find that you can store more guns in the safe if you arrange them muzzle down. You can use small plastic lids or whatever to prevent solvents/oils from staining the floor if that's a concern. Just my .02.

Guess I better hold on to the cabinet safe I have now!! I did a search and can't find them either. Mine is a Browning that I bought 20 years ago. I keep each gun in a soft case stacked inside and just grab the rifle I want when I'm leaving. It only holds about a dozen rifles but that's been enough so far.

That one Fjold found looks pretty nice.
