In my quest for a 8lb Winchester "do it all North America rifle" some of you have suggested the .270WSM. Let me say now that I'm about as old school as you can get, hey I shoot control round feed rifles in 300H&H and 6.5x55. But I did a more than a few hours of reading yesterday on the .270WSM. Now after doing the math I know its not a short .270weatherby, in energy or velocity. In fact I can see it being only a little better than the .270win, at least on paper. Will it kill a deer any deader than a .270win, a 30-06 or a 6.5x55, NO!! But I'm thinking it may help me get to where I want to be in this rifle project. Heres my two main reasons for considering the .270wsm. 1, It's a short action so you would think it would be lighter. Now this where I hope you can help me. Anybody got a stainless steel model 70 .270wsm barreled action they could weigh for me? How about a factory stock? Or the whole rifle? 2, Cost, I'm hoping to buy the .270wsm and restock it for around $1000, which is about a $1000 less than building a custom rifle. I'll take that and go hunting. As I stated if I buy a .270wsm I'd like to restock it. Who's making a replacement stock for a model 70 wsm? So .270wsm owners tell me about you rifle. [QUOTE]Originally posted by mark65x55: I was in Wal-Mart the other day and they had a 270WSM in a black stock for under $400.. I've got a 300wsm and just got a McMillian stock and I ordered it the first of Feb. My nephew has the 270wsm and sure likes it. I'm waiting for the 243wsm and will get one of those to play with. For my type of hunting I like a 30 cal rifle. Well good luck. Tom

Mark65x55, in your own criteria you said you want a "do it all" rifle. Howbeit a .270 Win could do the Job. I feel that is a little light in frontal dia. / bullet weight for heavy game. My personal big game battery consists of a .270win, and a .338Win. So naturally in my mind if I wanted a "do it all" rifle, it would most likely be in the middle, at 30 Caliber. Wich one? take your pick. I would either go with the 300win or the 300WSM, my self. If you don't want a .30cal, I would set my minimum for a "do it all" caliber at 7mm. The 7mm Rem Mag is not a bad vote in that respect. The 160gr Nosler partition is damn near a perfect one gun, one load for all of N.A., as you can get! Having said all that, the .270WSM will get the job done as well. No doubt about it. I don't no, it's your gun, what the heck do you want????

MarkG, I agree that the .277 is a little light of elk, the only elk I've killed was with a 160gr X out of a 7mm weatherby, but in the WSM form with a 150gr X or Partition it would work. Now, I want be hunting elk every weekend, one or two more times is about it and if I really feel the need I've got my 300H&H for elk.

I fell into a Win Mod 70, Classic, Laminated Stock 300 WSM. (Long Story) I am having a Hart 24" Barrel Chambered in 270 WSM, action tuned, trigger 2 3/4 lb. The Stock will be lightened along with Piller Bedding. Entire gun coated in Flat Black Guncote. Drilled and tapped 8-40 Screws in Talley Rings/Bases and a Zeiss Conquest scope. Hopefully it will be a real good shooter. Should have it back by July. I thiink the 270 WSM will be a good caliper. No better than most just want someting different.
