Looking at a local gun shop I found a pretty nice 300 Weatherby Mark V synthetic. I checked my Nosler manual and was suprised to see that the velocitys listed for RL22 were just about the same for a 300win and the 300 weatherby with 180gr bullets. The Weatherby was using 80gr and the Winchester 75.5. Should I interpret that as the Weatherby isn't as efficient even with a 26" barrel? Seems I might be getting more recoil without much gain in effectiveness.

I'd interpret it as the benefit of the weatherby over the Win Mag is minimal....100-150'/sec most.....Efficiency isn't a factor to me nor should it be to anyone.....if it was you should be looking to the .30-06 or better yet....308 winchester /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Western: Modern loading manuals are notoriously underloaded due to litigation. Those velocities are easily topped with smart reloading. I've chrono'd my 300 Weatherby at 3245 fps with 180s with a 26" barrel which is a long way from an 06's REALISTIC 2700 fps and a 308's 2600. That is a huge difference in my book anyway. On personal observation in hunting, I can tell you there is a significant difference in the killing power of a 300 Weatherby and an 06. Now a 300 Winnie and a Weatherby, the difference is minimal. Both are great cartridges. Hell ALL FOUR cartridges discussed are great, I just happen to like the Weatherby. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

Vapaodog, Nothing wrong with effeciency in cartridge desogn, and I know you agree that rounds like the 7mm-08, 7x57, 6.5x55, 30-06, and a dozen other similar cartridges are all solid rounds. Back to the 300 Weatnerby, the big variable in the reloading manuals for the Weatherby cartridges is "FREEBORE". When only Weatherby factory chambered the rifles and they all had freebore all was well. Once other guys started chambering it became a variable, IE: is the rifle freebored or not. Safe is not freebore chambered, lower pressure.

Nosler load data for most, if not all Weatherby chamberings, is conservative. I spoke with a Nosler representative about thier data concerning another Weatherby chamberings and was advised that Nosler load data was based on Weatherby's information. That is somewhat difficult to understand... Anyway, I forgot about Nosler when I started using the Barnes TSX which in my opinion is a better bullet. If you pick up a different reloading manuals, from manufacturers other than Nosler, you will find out you can do a bit better...

Actually more than just a bit. and you can do one thing with the .300 Weatherby that you can't do with the .300 Winchester Magnum, fire .300 H&H ammo in it if needed. Lawdog
